> btw. SymbOS is cool, but is anyone using it ??

SymbOS is one of the greatest things created for the MSX!
My request is: is it possile to create an installer that runs on Win, Linux, etc. that makes SymbOS installations for different machines?
For ex., you download a setup file for Win and launch it: you insert a SD card or a floppy disk and choose your MSX model and configuration. So the utility will write the custom installation on the mass media and... it'll ready to boot on MSX! :-)

Ah I see. I could at least write something like this for Windows.
But currently I am writing a small install utility for MSX-DOS. The main job of this tool is to set up the mass storage configuration, which is one of the biggest issue, when people try to get SymbOS running on their MSX. After this we can see, if we still need a tool for Win/Linux.

@Trebmint: I will make a deeper test of SymStudio during this week.

So has anyone tried this and got the sample projects running in symbos?

Can you make it more Linux/Wine friendly? For starters that would mean no pictures with odd horizontal resolution. Dunno why Wine bugs on that, but it only appears to go well with even pictures in SymStudio. After that I can check if some more things could be done to make it work better.

One thing I wanted to say about Symbos is that it's time to start creating programs that allow user to create stuff. Currently, Symbos has excellent abilities to look at pictures, listen to music and even read ebooks, but to actually CREATE any of those things, a PC is needed. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to write DOX files, draw pictures and even write music from inside symbos?

Hm, regarding pictures and videos I have no idea, but I have the feeling that progs like Photoshop always generate the best results. In any way: When converting "media" into 8bit computer conform stuff, you mostly get the best results if you use PC tools. They are much faster (because of the platform) and have the better algorithms. Though I am not speaking about pattern modes!
Apart from this of course I <would> like to develop a paint program for SymbOS. But maybe my next projekt, the XML2DOX converter, will also be useful already.

Of course for converting photos and the like, a computer would do the best job (and I never even suggested that video tools be made availble on-platform) but I do think that a pixel-oriented art program and a text editor and/or word processor would go a long way in giving more answers to the "What''s it good for crowd" I'd help code if I could, but doing so escapes my feeble brain. My old offer to help with documentation still stands though.

Prodatron, do you have a full specification of the DOX format? It might be a great idea to implement an XML2DOX in PHP, so as to convert XHTML/XML websites to DOX on the fly. As in, serve MSX, serve SymZilla!

Two things mandatory on any operating system: plain text editor, file manager.

The file manager is present, accounted for and quite nice. The text editor, on the other hand...

One thing I'd like is more the ability to change the mouse pointer. Sometimes an arrow just isn't appropriate like in a text editor etc. Just say 4 fixed types we could swap between would be great. Oh and then get the 16 colour icon into the app header also

Yes, I will add the 16 colour icons for the app header as soon as I add the possibility to use 16 colours for the desktop icons.
A text editor would be really useful... I have to add a multiline-textinput-box control for this first.
@D-Tail: A little DOX format description is included in the preview-package: http://www.symbos.de/preview.htm

Prodatron (or others with inside symbos knowledge)> I was decoding some symbos apps and I'm wondering about something. At the start of the of each app you take the process ID from the location in the transfer area after the stack to put it in other places where it's needed. But there's also a process ID in the post init values in the header. Is there any special reason for choosing one?
