New game convertions!

Two games were recently converted from tape to disk: the first is Alteread Beast, convertion done by Amusement Factory - and the second (inspired by Alteread Beast's convertion) is Time Scanner by ICON Games.

So, now those two games can be fully appreciated on any MSX (as long as you have at least 64k RAM) and specially on those with "turbo", so the games run full speed, like in the ZX Spectrum... and there's more to come

Just keep an eye on my site for more stuff like this... ex: a *very* impressive video, made by Luciano Sturaro (webmaster of MSX Pró) on MSX Jaú, showing a demo of Prince of Persia (made in BASIC!) running on the VDU!

good work, but Alteread Beast for msx sucks...
maybe I would have chosen a remake approach

Was there ever an MSX version (even if from a partial ZX Spectrum port)?!? How cool!

On GFX 9000 it can be done like the Genesis or Arcade version, right?

First - remember it is a Spectrum game, and it was just converted from tape to disk

Second, try the game on a MSX2 or higher with TURBO. You will be surprised by how good the game actually is! And the same works for Time Scanner too...

First, thanks very much for all, Slotman, Fudeba et alt!!!!!, and hope there will be some more conversions like for example... Scramble Spirits by SEGA, which was donated to the community by me and Sapphire. If you have used the CAS from Martos of Time Scanner... tape was donated to me by Valkyr and I sent the tape to Martos ^-^.

This is totally great, amazing work! I want to play them just now!!

The target is to convert all remaining tape games to file/disk...
I don't know if it'll be possible, though. The conversion process is not "that difficult", but correcting bugs left by the original programmers on those games can be a real pain in the ass. Some of them are really bad programmed ports, which probably explains why they were never converted to disk. But the final result is cool: a new playable game in just a few hours of work... instead of years of work.

- First we need a finished, full-featured VDU available.
- After that, we need to buy the VDU (and probably the computer attached to it).
- Finally, we need programmers with time to re-create the entire game.

Of course VDU make things a lot easier (and faster) to develop, but without it...

(With VDU, even the ZX Spectrum converted Altered Beast could be VERY better,
being faster even on 3.57MHz computer *and* without color clash!)

Developing a full featured game like AB for VDU and distributing it only in bundle with the board
would promote VDU sells (in this way the buyer knows that has at least ONE game
that exploits it )
Otherwise there is the classical chicken/egg problem, (HW without SW / SW without HW)

btw
dreaming for VDU patch for AB...

Gimme the hardware, and I can at least draw the game and make the music. Now all I need is a skilled programmer (and the HW ofcourse). No, really. If the VDU will be produced I am willing to participate in a demogame-project for it.

You dont need it...! VDU use 4 normal VDP's, so anything you draw suported by a normal 2+, will be the same on VDU - just imagine you have 4 layers to work with, being color 0,0,0 transparent (It's so compatible, you can run *any* msx game on *any* VDP!)

Also why would you need a VDU to make music...?!

But let's not rush things, developing a complete game now - while the project is still unfinished could be a waste of time; since other stuff is being implemented, whatever you code for today's prototype, could be done best (or even easier) in the final unit

Fudeba: well, also, some games were very unknown for MSX users (Time Scanner for example) and also, some tape-disk conversions which were done by community users in the 80's or the 90's don't work under MSX-DOS 2 or Basic 2.0 for example.

I like very much your tape-disk conversions. Now we can really enjoy these games.

Can someone make an "oficial" list of games still to be adapted from tape to disk? And - as a separated list - the games that don't fully work (and what's wrong with them, example: Batman the Movie - adapted to disk - only loads first level then hangs, etc)

This would help a lot on further adaptations...!
