The pause act is finally over, the lines are closed, you can't sms your votes anymore. With the contestants eagerly waiting in the Green room, they'll be delighted to know that the results are in. "Good evening Belgium!"

If only this would be huh! But, within our MSX community MSXdev is certainly an event like the Eurovision Songcontest, with people from multiple countries competing for MSXdev gold, each with their own unique voice. And so, the results are indeed in. Without further ado, the ranking:

  1. Heroes Arena, by Imanok: 85,33%
  2. Zombie Near, by Óscar Toledo Gutiérrez: 80%
  3. Hans' Adventure, by The Pets Mode: 78%
  4. QBIQS, by Z80ST-Software: 77%
  5. DAQ Lord Of Idar, by Darkstone: 63,33%
  6. NeoPONG512, by Z80ST-Software: 57%
  7. Mission2Mir, by RAY2DAY MSX SOFTWARE: 43,67%

Heroes Arena features the best graphics, polish and game originality. Zombie Near shares its position with Heroes Arena for best game originality. QBIQS features the best music and game play. Not only did Heroes Arena win the general contest, it also won a special sponsored prize for offering (at least) two player mode. Ratbox, by AG Software, got disqualified for using ripped graphics (by Matra, Casio and Konami).

And with all that, another fine contest is right behind us. Thanks to the organizers and most of all, the contenders, this edition has resulted in eight free and diverse MSX1 games. Some of them have been programmed in MSX-BASIC even. Naturally, programmers and game designers who've missed the deadline of this contest will have to wait for the next edition to submit their hard work. Assuming that MSXdev'11 will follow this edition, it's a matter of waiting for that announcement.

Wow! That is not the ranking I would have expected oO

I expected Hans's Adventure to get less points than Qbiqs fur sure. As Hans is an ASM conversion of the earlier BASIC entry for the Konamito Basic contest.

Anyway. Congrats to all contestants.

Hans' adventure isn't a conversion from BASIC to ASM. There are a lot of features inside that makes this game different.

NeoPong should have been the winner just because Artrag was on it.
Results are fair. QBIQS is excellent, but just an excellent implementation of Quarth.

BTW, Can't we have a side competition where judges rate all games that we're ranked on the last position of all MSXdev competitions?
Mission2Mir + Hose Diogo Martinez + Plumber + Ballon City + etc...

Why not?

...and maybe among the winners too.

Not a bad idea actually, but it should include actual efforts that developers have done their best on, not Bussas Quest.
*edit* Something similar, I'd be more interested in a fresh report by several experienced MSXers of *all* MSXdev games above 75%.

I did my best in game creation at the time. Snif. What are you suggesting?
BTW, Hose Diogo Martinez, the guy who inspired the game, just gave us some new ideas.
A game where you control Diogo and you have to keep paying bills and doing Italian risotti while your girlfriend is doing some private classes with a Kung Fu instructor (called Josias) in another room.

@muffie: winner due to me?

Actually I would have voted for zombie near for the two player idea
QBIOS technically is prolly the most advanced among the others games, but I agree, Quarth is already there

Difficult decision for the jury, with these productions of high qualities. Cool

A very deserved award.

Well, I can´t complain about the results either, IMHO Heroes Arena was the best entry this year, close followed by Zombie Near and Hans' Adventure.

Too bad this MSXDev had less entries than in previous years.

WHAT do we need to do for MSXDEV11?
Contests are getting fewer and not-so-elaborated entries year after year.

no new contest for a year next year again. only 20msxdev12 or somthing like that longer time and msx2 like v9938 128kram and no rom file just a disk image...

Hehehe, you're the first one this year to start this ever returning remark.
There are/were competitions for those specs... Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

I say, just continue as we were. Some entries did not make it this year. So some will pop up on next MSXdev.
This year was the one I have enjoyed the best. There are all sorts of genres/platforms represented. We have BASIC and assembly games, new comers and well know names.

Perhaps it would be faired to divide the prize money over the top x entries. Not just givving the money to the nr 1.

Perhaps a simple to use crosscompiler that automagically creates ROM files would improve a lot the number of MSXDev entries. Wink

And how do you think basic games were delivered to msxdev?
The classic hose diogo was entirely coded in basic. I know its hard to believe, but thats true.

ROM creation is fairly simple with cross-assemblers. Same for BASIC (IIRC there is a tool on the MSXdev site to convert BASIC to a ROM file).

Working with a ROM is much easier for me than file handling in my code.

EDIT:
Here is the link to the page with the tool I mentioned

Suggestion for the next MSXdev: There should also be a category named "MSX standard compliance", earning points for respecting the MSX standard properly. Smile

Huey, the SPEED (or slowness) of BASIC game does not increase just because it is converted to a .ROM file. Wink

Of course not. Is that what LeandroCorreia meant?

In theory a complete BASIC compiler should be possible (I made some compilers during my study days using "Lex & Yacc" ). But it takes much time to build Sad
