Hi, actually I'm using openMSX with NMS 8255 configuration (2 disk drives). I'd like to add a hard disk, so I've pluged Sunrise IDE extension and as I've read in openMSX docs it creates a drive named hd.dsk with 100Mb of size. At this point all right, the hd is created but now comes the problem: wich drive is maped the hdd? The floppy drives has been moved to C: and D:, but I can't locate the HDD.

thanks.

You have a HDD, but it's unpartitioned.

What you do (like on a real MSX):

Step 1: insert a floppy with MSX-DOS2 and the partitioning tool (IDEFDISK.COM) in the floppy drive and reset the MSX, keeping the INS key pressed. Now start IDEFDISK and partition the HDD as you wish.

Step 2: After resetting again, the A: drive is the first partition on the HDD... but the partition is empty, so you won't find any files on it. If you have 4 partitions you have drive A: to D: mapped to them. You can copy MSX-DOS2 on it via the floppy drive (drive E: in this example), e.g. in BASIC.

You can also let openMSX create partitions for you (replacing Step 1): see a tutorial here: http://www.lavandeira.net/2014/12/relearning-msx-5-setting-u... (mostly the last part)

For Step 2, there's also this tutorial: http://www.lavandeira.net/2014/12/relearning-msx-6-setting-u...

Thanks to Javi for making these tutorials :)

You can also check this page of the blueMSX manual (steps 3 and 4) :

Quite a novice to this subject as well as I can manage with DSK files...
But what if someone wants to release something too big for a DSK file? Is such a harddisk image an option then? Is it ZIP-able to a reasonable download size and can the downloader just stick in an IDE interface into openMSX and have it autorun?

Sure you can. But how do you want to cope with real MSX?

dd it to an sd-card? Or mount it and copy the files.

I would only include it as an “extra”, though, alongside the actual files so I can manually copy them to my existing sd-card. It should compress well btw.

Glad to hear that the tutorials are helpful. I have the feeling that the current MSX scene is assuming too much knowledge. Not very welcoming for new users.

I agree a lot of basic knowledge that we consider trivial is not really shared anywhere.

I noticed as well in a couple of the newbie threads, that you really need to explain stuff rather than pointing to some resource and saying "it’s all explained there".
