I just ran into this on Kickstarter:

Check it out!

TOTALLY like the idea... But sadly don't like the implementation:

Quote:

The system minimally consists of four stackable units (CPU board, memory board, I / O Board and Board programmer)

Seriously? This should be single-board, period. Z80 based SBC in about CD-box size has been done in the 80's. In 2015 one could do it smaller. Some ROM, RAM, and low-level IO / programming facilities should be included. Perhaps an exotic memory chip like FRAM (replacing separate ROM + RAM) to reduce IC count. With connectors to take existing Arduino shields.

Also a complete set € 60 for early backers? Come on, simple Arduino boards cost what, $10 or less these days? Z80 / ROM / RAM chips aren't that expensive, and board / assembly / shipping costs are the same regardless Z80 based or Arduino.

So I very much like the idea... but unfortunately don't see myself backing this. Sad

@RetroTechie: You seem to have all the answers. I'm looking forward to your Kickstarter then. When can I kickstart your designs?

......

Arent people allowed to give feedback /criticizm on stuff? Do we all need to jump for joy with a rainbow up our ass on whatever news????

@syn: Of course not. Criticize all you like! It's great that somebody points out how it's flawed before you go out and buy something you do not want or cannot use.
I just think people underestimate how much time goes into designing, prototyping, testing and mass producing this stuff. Even mediocre stuff. If it were all that easy it would already have been done by someone. But that's just my humble opinion.
But if it really is that easy I'd like to see people actually do it and not just talk about it. I agree with all of Retrotechie's arguments and I'd seriously like to see his ideas/designs/enhancements come to life. I meant it when I said I'd like to see him kickstart it. If he can do it for $10 per board I'm all for it!

With regard tot the Ziloghino; The question that keeps coming to mind is "Can we mod this somehow to find a use for it in MSX-world?" I have not been able to answer that one. Until I do I will not join this Kickstarter. So any ideas are welcome.

Im sorry if I came on a bit harsh, I wasn't in a good mood when I wrote that post.

The problem with hardware projects like this (and these kinda projects in general) is that everyone has their own vision/ideas/needs so what is perfect for some may not appeal to others. I personally feel the same as Retrotechie, although I expect a z80 based board like this to cost a little bit more than an arduino, just because the parts may be older/harder to get.

I don't really know what you kinda ideas you have for things you can do with such a z80 board in combination with msx? I assume you can create some breakoutboard that you put into your cartridge port and then connect it with a ziloghino or similar board and use it like some co-processor?

I was thinking (really just thinking) it may be fun to connect some arduino board to a msx this way (because some models have like SD card, ethernet, wifi, usb port and whats not.. would make a perfect all in one MSX upgrade) but I lack the technical knowledge to create something like that.

Well, maybe by adding two more boards, a ROM-board and a GPU-board, you can make something that vaguely resembles an MSX out of it. I'd name it an MSX-tower. What GPU to use? A TMS9129, a Yamaha V9938/58 or a Yamaha V9990?

Problem is there's not much to go on. No Eagle PCB-files, no pin description of the connectors. So I'm really in the dark here. Only way to find out how you can connect stuff to it is to buy one and trace the lines.

So...
I joined the Kickstarter. I'm #2 with 29 days to go Smile
