Hi all, here we go again with my newbie problems Smile
I recently found a tiny, good-looking, complete and boxed Philips D6600 30D tape recorder. It was practically unused, and worked at first try with new batteries (I currently have no 6V external PSU for it, but plan to buy one). Problem is, my only recorder cable, which was working superbly loading WAV files from the PC, behaves strangely. When I plug the REM cable, it won't let the recorder PLAY any cassette (motor stopped), even when I issue a load command in one of its flavors, or alternatively try with MOTOR ON. With the latter command, I distinctively hear a CLICK from the computer (Philips VG-8020). Same with MOTOR OFF. But no effect on the recorder. If I unplug the cable, it plays normally.

I read someone else - at least two users - had the same problem in the past, but they couldn't sort it out. What can it be? A cable problem? Or worse, a problem in some component of my micro? Or the recorder itself maybe? I though with a Philips dedicated recorder I could play everything straight out of the tape, but I was wrong Sad.
Please, tell me this can be addressed, I need the REM functionality to try and load The Hobbit adventure from tape (yes, I'm still stuck with it!). TIA.

Hi Orion,

A first quick test is to check resistance on the REM plug with a simple ohmmeter. Contact should be ON after a MOTOR ON and OFF after a MOTOR OFF as you can guess. Also check the values reported by the ohmmeter and report them here. It could be that the contact mechanism (that produces the "click" sound on the MSX) does not work so well.

I already had an issue like that but the problem was related to the data recorder...

If it´s for the cable, let me know! I got much more than I need around here.

Here I am, I'm afraid with bad news from the recorder Sad
I tried with my tiny ohmmeter, and the response was that issuing a MOTOR ON, it effectively closes the circuit. The tape should play, but it doesn't. Chances are, I have to blame the recorder itself. I am no expert in electronics, so I guess I won't try and open it up to see what's going wrong, unless it's a simple fault (e.g., a fuse). Any hint? Thanks.

You need a beautiful, fully functional data´corder for your glossy VG:

I got one to give away, no need for money.

I still think your tape recorder is fine, but your cable is broken... Try the ohm meter between DIN-connectors REM-pins (7,8) and the tiny 2.5mm connector. I bet one of those two don't connect.

Also packed a tested cable by.
But would be a good idea to test both out. The 6600 is a real beauty!

Did I mention that I like tapes?

What a good opportunity to throw some pics...
