I've got a Panasonic FS-A1WSX.

I have a v2.2 of the Carnivore2, but it never came with the stereo output. Is it worth fitting, if so, is there a way of knowing if I need more than just fitting the port? Is there enough games, that would take advantage of it?

I'm wanting to flash to the latest version of the firmware as well. I'd normally send it back to be redone, but in the times we live in, I'd rather just try and flash the cart myself, and fit any upgrades needed.

I put the stereo 3.5mm output on there, and the sound is there very noise free, also the PSG sounds great. It is worth it in my opinion Wink

Thanks!

Did you just fit the port, or did you have to fit other parts as well?

Late reply but I just read this message (context);

Pentarou, I think the software should be adapted for the cartridge, not vice versa. You can easily patch a software to detect C2 instead of MFR. The actively supported software (like VGMPlay) can be updated to detect C2 and use either the default PSG port or an alternative one. I would not recommend to play around with the C2's ID in the boot block because this will likely to create compatibility issues with the software that supports C2 and with C2's own utilities as well.

Ideally hardware should be presented in a way that it can be detected in a single way. You can’t expect all software to be continuously updating their detection for every new hardware that offers a 2nd PSG. The simplest detection for a PSG is to write a value to a register and then see if you can read it back. This is what VGMPlay does, so by exposing port 12H for reading it will be detected and work fine.

As a fall-back even if I don’t detect anything I currently still assume a write-only PSG to be present at 10H that is used when needed. However this is problematic and continued support for write-only and undetectable PSGs can not be guaranteed.

I only make an exception for the MFR because it has been around for so long, there are so many out there, and it does not receive updates anymore that I know of. However this is an exception rather than the rule, a real PSG is read-write so it is not unreasonable to expect that from a quality clone as well.

Got my Carnivore2 yesterday. Great combination of hardware and software!

Unfortunately I have an issue when I boot with MSXUSB in slot1 and Carnivore2 in slot2. MSXUSB runs the latest Nextor2.1.0 with its USB storage driver. I updated Carnivore2 to run CF on latest Nextor2.1.0 SunriseIDE driver as well to prevent mixing Nextor versions.

The issue is when it is loading NEXTOR.SYS from the first volume (USB). First it loads normally and then it hangs forever. If I put Carnivore2 in slot1 and MSXUSB in slot2 it boots normally with CF as drive A: and USB stick as drive B:.

So there is a workaround but what is causing this? Does the Sunrise driver want to be first? Is it the way it boots via the BootMenu which destroys any earlier recognised drives? Or is there an issue in my MSXUSB driver?

Anyway, food for thought.

Update: When I make a new configuration entry without IDE it boots wonderfully. I guess that rules out the hardware and bootmenu. Focusing now on SunriseIDE icw MSXUSB driver.

Yes, I've also noticed that when there are 2 different Nextor-based devices are in the same system, there may be a conflict between them. If you use Nextor BIOS + Sunrise BIOS it works ok. I've notified Konamiman about this already:

(maybe someone else mentioned this before sometime somewhere, but)
Yesterday I got my first Carnivore 2 and it was the same day I bricked it (quite an achievement Running Naked in a Field of Flowers ) by flashing someone else's 8MB flash file to mine.
I went to the manual on the RBSC site and found a way to fix this. It were quite some steps and I wonder if this process could be automated so I just need to run one file that copies back all the bios files for me.

Congratulations! That must be a first! When I am doing an update I tend to unplug anything else that could be affected. I came into possession of a C2 recently, had for a long time a MFRSCC+SD (two slots), about to get a playsoniq cartridge too. I am using a Sony F1XDJ MSX2+, I cannot use all three cartridges at the same time, what do people suggest?

Since the Sony has FMPAC built in and the playsoniq device has SCC+, really all i need is a storage device? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MSX-SD-Mapper-Megaram-512Kb-Expan...

1. Get another IDE device that can boot to MSX-DOS2 and copy the latest Carnivore2 utilities on that device's media
2. Boot from another IDE device or from Carnivore2
3. Run C2BACKUP tool and save your Carnivore2's FlashROM into a FRB file
4. Copy the backup file to the media of your other IDE device - this will be your quick recover solution

If your Carnivore2 gets bricked, just boot from the other IDE device and write the backup file back into your FlashROM. Remember to always use the latest Carnivore2 utilities from the repository. After you upgrade the Boot Menu or BIOSes, make a new backup file.

I am curious, please send me that 8mb file to take a look at. I wonder how that file could have bricked your Carnivore...
