hi,

On the 8bits4ever site this is stated:

Note: When the cartridge is configured as SCC+, all the rest of the features (IDE, RAM, SCC, Flash ROM and FM pack) will be disabled.

Why is this? Why disable evrything else when SCC+ is enabled?

Some games may now work with SCC+ in the expanded slot. So you may need to run a game from a different device and to configure Carnivore to function as SCC+ only. But this is needed only for certain games, not for all. This option is more like a workaround.

is the carnivore2 upgradable without the usb blaster? I'm thinking about ordering one ... but at this point i'll wait till the kinks have been worked out since i don't feel like buying an usb blaster just to update.

I remember also the time when I was looking one to update OCM... I didn't buy as theses were seriously expensive cables!... Now you seem to find one from eBay for less than 3€ including world wide shipping... For that price it is not a bad cable to have around "just in case"

The current firmware is more or less final. I don't think there will be any major updates. So 8bits4ever will supply the cartridge with the latest firmware.

I just bought an FM-PAK from them and I like the quality of the product.. I will order one in the (near) future.

How FMPAC saves data by default? Is it in eeprom? Since battery is not required.

The normal FMPAC cartridge has a battery backuped SRAM chip. We emulate this functionality. But by default we don't install a battery into Carnivore2.

So, when I receive my assembled cartridge from 8bits4ever, I will not be able to save game data in SRAM?

Would be possible to update cartridge firmware and save data into FLASH so no backup battery required?

You will be able to save the data into SRAM, but it won't survive the power-off event. The game that saves the data into SRAM works via the emulation layer of Altera into the defined address space in the physical RAM. To be able to save this data into the Flash chip the firmware needs a major upgrade. Taking into account that the firmware occupies over 90% of the chip's resources already, such modification not feasible, sorry. With the battery you should be able to resolve this problem easily.

Btw, I hope that 8bits4ever could give you a discount as a gratitude for your work on the English translation of the FMPAC bios.

Is it hard to install the battery? Or it needs to be soldered? And to what area it will save? Would that area be damaged if you use it as RAM or some other way?
