I imagine they own the original designs (as they were created by Yamaha for ASCII) so turning a CMOS design into FPGA might not be too difficult.

I thought that as well but since they didn't use their original designs on the OCM I'm skeptical about it.

This is the big question, isn't it? Who is programming the darn thing and to what specs? My fear is that Mr. Nishi is relying on his students for development. They probably aren't aware of the many details in these VDP's and other parts of the system.

On the other hand, the OCM firmware has been upgraded by the community and ended up being quite well. So there's hope for the MSX3 too. I just wish the community was more involved in this. There are some awesome experts on this forum who could help get the details right. Or is the Japanese community already helping out and we just can't see that?

(By the way, has someone already reached out to Mr. Nishi if he could demonstrate his project at the Nijmegen fair? If we could get him to videocall with us...)

Other than KdL and Hara-san, no one else, to my knowledge, is contributing to the OCM FPGA...

Victor Trucco made a contribution on OPL3 and Turbo-R compatible Midi interface (I think only Midi was used on OCM and derivatives, as there is no space on FPGA for OPL3 in OCM/Zemmix and first generation OCM based fpgas, but SM-X, Multicore 2 and 2+ and SX2 have it)

I've made a contribution on the Internet / ESP8266 front, that can be used on OCM if you use the adapter that KdL made (for OCM/Zemmix Neo and first generation of OCM based fpgas) and is available from the start on SM-X and SX2, as well two very minor additions to the VDP (Blink correction to switch pages in graphics modes, undocumented bit that change the Blink to be fed by HSYNC instead of VSYNC, causing the effects known as "Cadari bit")

Some other people probably helped across the time, but, no one is like KdL and Hara-san, unfortunately I don't have the time to help more, even my personal projects are halted due to too much real life work and still have a family to devote some time Tongue It would be really great if more people ventured into FPGA, KdL is such a nice guy to work with and I'm sure he will appreciate good help!

I think talented MSX developers are not lacking in Japan, and Mr. Nishi has connections. He doesn't not rely solely on students. Then the MSX3 will be chargeable and rumor has it it's not cheap so there is funding.

Some recent statements by Kazuhiko Nishi on his Twitter account (I have not but seen otherwise. Only Facebook for my part):

"I have decided to include V9990 functions into new video for MSX3. It will look like 9958+9990 and 2K support.
We will have all MSX audio. SCC is pending by licensiong status with Konami.Additional function under experiment is PCM audio max speed and bit width.
The ARM 32-bit MSX3 and the next MSX will be equipped with an ARM 64-bit virtual CPU. So the object code is compatible with MSX3 and the next. I want to make a CPU that runs 64-bit.
We are prototyping 4 64-bit arm with a huge fpga. But it's just a prototype. Makes it stackable on the Msx100 bus. We will wait for the price of fpga to become cheaper before releasing it."

So far, Nishi is a man full of ideas. Let's see what he ends up bringing to life.

Project EGG is a kind of Japanese version of Good Old Games site with a big official MSX game library.

EGG libraries? Question

Especially for Super Cooks! Makes me wonder if they will open up Project EGG outside Japan.
