Thank you, although I have to agree that the trackball does not have the same elegance as a mouse.

It's hard, if you don't have the hardware for testing. So I wonder, if this is emulated in e.g. OpenMSX? Maybe I can ask them next week

No need to ask, just try it...? In the openMSX OSD menu, go to hardware -> connectors -> joystick port A and check what you can plug in....
