What hardware extension for MSX would you produce if money were not an issue?

Like some ppl already said, I would love to see a new msx. But not a MSX 3 but just something that already exists, complete MSX system with all the current tech with something extra maybe.

- 100% MSX turbo R compatible (r800)
- Including MSX music, Msx Audio, SCC, Moonsound, SCC+
- V9990/gfx9000 superimposed on the V9958
- 4mb ram
- Build-in flash to load roms like megaflashrom
- Some extra stuff like SD/cf card reader that can read floppy images.
- USB port for joypads/keyboard
- All MSX connector/ports
- Midi in out/through or just use a usb port for it.
- VGA or hdmi out
- Stereo out, with a switch to pan each soundchip to left/right seperately.
- Maybe ethernet
- SMALL FORMFACTOR (like mini ITX/current onechip MSX)

To answer Wolf_'s question, to get more software on the msx. the answer is imho to get a bigger/wider user base. Bigger userbase = maybe more devs from other scenes willing to start developing games. If promoted well, this all-in-one msx should actually increase the amount of MSX USERS (for example with a 50 to 100 dollar/euro price for a cool retrodevice, based on a faster z80 cpu, retrogamers may think "ah nice lets see what this is about", and retrodevs may start zerging the msx scene Tongue ).

Although I think for such a project you would need more than 1million dollars.

A different project that I really would like to do sometimes, not directly aimed towards msx, but something I had been dreaming about for some time, is to remake the Sega Saturn Joypad with both USB and the oldskool 9 pins connector (basically aimed towards the 80's -90's computers like msx, c64, amiga, zxspectrum, sega megadrive etc etc). The Saturns Joypad is generally regarded as the best digital joypad ever made. Right now afaik they no longer in production, and anything on ebay saying its a new sega saturn pad, is basically a lower quality (licenced) pad produced in china that starts to break down after 6 months. Yes I know 10 buttons is a bit overkill for msx but whatever Wink

Yeah, I got the MPC for MT32, I guess I use this instead of the gm 0.50 version when using the MT-32..
Adding the player(s) to the musicpak would be really great!!
Any change that you could also make this work for PSG sound? Or is that impossible?

I'm kind of a noob when it comes to midi...what are the differences when using a more expensive midi device? I red that the MT-32 is not the best out there..

The GM.MPC config will sound terrible on your mt32 as the mt32 is not gm compatible and has different channel settings.
The MT32 is not the best solution but it seem's that it isn't that bad.
I prefer using Yamaha XG modules as they do have a nice warm sound, but the Roland sound canvas series are doing a good job too (SC88 better then the sc-50)

The SC-155 and the SC-88 do also have a audio in, that's nice as you can mix in your msx psg !

SMALL FORMFACTOR (like mini ITX/current onechip MSX)
If a new MSX were to be produced, I would like it to look like a "old school" MSX, which is something that 1chip MSX lacks. If I have to use a PC keyboard together with a small box merely big enough to fit the cartridge slots, I don't feel like I'm using a real MSX but rather a "hardware emulated" MSX. Yes, it's quite silly and I understand that 1chip MSX-like projects are our only chance to have new MSXes in the future, but this is how I feel. Smile

If I had a say in it, I would start to (re)produce turbo-r's. Probably with a bit more memory and a memory card adapter. If there is room left in the case, some extras could be build in (music module, moonsound etc) so a slotexpander would not be needed anymore. Not sure about the formfactor though. Old style for nostalgia reasons, a lot smaller, or many build in a small pc case and external keyboard

Yeah when I think about it a bit more, I actually i wouldnt mind at all if a new msx will be produced if it would be bigger then what I suggested.

BUT imho not as bulky as the old msx (mind you I had a sanyo wave fd2 which was one of the the biggest msx everTongue )

Maybe something the size of a normal PC keyboard, not as thin but still thinner then existing msx'es, with space for the ports at the back + 1 at the "top" above your F-keys.

Thanks a lot for the info! Those models are probably a bit harder to obtain..but, hey, let's start with the MT-32 and go from there..Hannibal

with an unlimited amount of money I would skip the extension story and start gathering a team of HW profs and industrial designers. I would inform them well about the MSX standard and ask them to develop the MSX3 which is fully backwards compatible with MSX1,2,2+,turboR.

You're using a MSX<n> right now. We all are.
Just run openMSX and you'll have full backward compatibility with MSX1, 2, 2+ and TR.

...it's emulation? ohhh, One Chip MSX also "try to "simulate" the same behavior of MSX chips".
