NoWind - New batch?

NoWind - New batch?

por Jorito en 11-02-2013, 20:36
Tema: Hardware
Etiquetas: Nowind
Idiomas:

The Nowind MSX interface that allows you to connect your MSX to your PC through USB. In July 2012, all Nowind interfaces were sold out and there were no plans yet to create a new batch. However, as of the end of last month the Nowind creators are investigating if a new batch can be created. For a new batch of Nowind interfaces there are about 25-30 buyers needed before production can start. There's no information available on pricing, but chances are that it won't be much different from the € 69,- price tag of the first batch.

Currently there's about 10 people that are interested in ordering a Nowind interface. If you are also interested, please inform Sky_hawk. Further details and contact information can be found at the Nowind new batch initiative page.

I already own a Nowind version 1.0 but I may consider ordering one of these too depending on the design direction. I'd love to have one of the sleeker designs that is in a regular sized MSX cart and preferably has a mini-USB connector port where the cable could be detached and stored away when not in use. : )

So put me down for one as well if the design direction is turning out to be in this direction. : )

Does this interface also work on a one-chip (KdL version) msx ?

Por Sky_hawk

Imagen del Sky_hawk

14-02-2013, 02:45

I have tested it on my oen one chip msx, but i dont know what the 'kdl' version means, i myself have the orginal japanese one in blue casing (or at least i thought those where the original onces.)

That said, it works on any msx the a have tested, and even on gr8bit, which is a little diffenent from an msx in bus timing, so i expect no problems there.

About the size and form factor, i would love to see the normal cartridge sized cases being used again, however, this might depend on availability and production process that we use. As that is not determined yet, it is hard to say what we end up with.

Geeetings,

Jan

The KdL version means, the Original One Chip MSX running on KdL's OCM-PLD.

I think that's the most used OCM configuration.

I've already played around with it a bit (Did a live stream evening/night with only MSX1 demos on real hardware Big smile)

Some things I noticed: it does not like Yamaha CX5M for some reason (timing issue / no reliable transfer possible)
and also it does not like 7MHz msx2 with I/O accelleration (the mod for 7mhz so it doesnt switch back to 3.58MHz on every i/o port but only on the VDP ports).

Lol! Same here: this is beyond any acceptable delay and communication (or the lack of it).

No matter the situation: if you can't inform your customers properly (if no email, then some common status info on the site), you should think about leaving the business. Don't sell products you can't deliver: simple as that.

The real bad factor is that he responds to new customers, promises wolverine his will be shipped in a week once payed but people who are waiting for a long time don't hear diddly shit.

I haven't complained to Rob yet, because I read here some people were still receiving thinking it just took a while. But promising new customers they will receive them soon while others in wait is a bit weird. Unless ofcourse he is receiving a whole bunch and shipping those in the next days.

tell that to Lord Zett and some others, ridiculous, if there was a message explaining the long waiting period or a clear statement saying something like "after ordering, you have to wait 48 to 52 days" then you know what to expect.
Now it is like, they were sold out, but took the orders anyway and are waiting for new parts to start batch number 3 or something, i dont mind that, but TELL us something. Sad

I just want to say that I finally got around to play around with my nowind and I think its really a fantastic device. Since I am still doing catch-up because I haven't used a real msx for 2 decades, ive been downloading lots of stuff from the web to play, listen, watch. And it works great: download, unpack, mount with nwhostapp, reset msx and I am good to go. I can imagine how much of a hassle it would have been to pull out and insert sd/flashcard, copy, pull out insert again.... for everytime I downloaded something. Only thing I am missing is the ability to access folders on pc instead of dsk images, hope that will implemented someday.

I mean they (sunrise) have been doing msx stuff for as long as I remember, over 20 years at least... I was never that active in the MSX scene and even I know their name.. that must say something Wink So I dont think this delay/wait is intentional to annoy ppl or a scam, but instead must have a valid reason.

Nobody was in love with making MSX1 games and holding back progress...

Also at that time the Sunrise Foundation was just a few years old and growing fast, with many volunteers working together.
It's a shame Rob doesn't seem to trust other people to help... The bus factor is simply too low.

Has nobody ever had a delay in any of their projects?

Sunrise is a non-profit foundation, existing for 25 years, and you are all bashing it to death, OVER ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Yet when Bazix, which actually was a FOR-PROFIT COMPANY, did not live up to their promises of the Western OCM, almost nobody complained.
When the Woomb games people BOUGHT suddenly *STOPPED WORKING* there were no daily bashes here.

You can probaly unbrick by youself. Just take the ruscue floppy, insert the nowind in slot 1, reset msx. When then flash program has started press 1,2,1 this actively switches between slots 1 and 2.

Now try flashing from the pc. If this doesnt work, insert nowind in slot 2 and do the same but press 2,1,2
And try flashing again.

Make sure to use you v4.3 from the website.

If this doesnt work, call me, i'll talk you through testing the hardware.

Greetings,,

Jan

I know the basics and have been able to rescue a couple of cases, but this seems trickier. BTW: somehow with a tR or 8245 no attempts ever work, need a Sony 2+... The bricking happened with a V-20.

There are differences between msx's, where cartrdige slots are not connected to slot 1 but to 3-3. In that case slot 2 should still work. However i use a turbo r gt myself for testing, and that has never failed to date, and i mean _never_.

I have flashed dozens of nowinds using my turbo r and my philips 8235/00, always works flawless, also it it very uncommon for a nowind interface to become bricked. Even if flashing fails by disconnecting the usb cable during flashing, the disk method can always recover it, unless it is physically broken.

I can think of two moee things: you vould try holding 1 during the turbo-r boot, if you have a 4.3 rescue disk it should automatically detect the r800 and switch to z80 mode.

Finally the 8245's have unbuffered catridge slots, which can effect timing of the communication, it makes the 8245 a bad candidate to unbrick a nowind...

Greetings,

Jan

When I saw that people were receiving them, I waited about 3 weeks and them send a friendly mail asking if my payment went through correctly (which was a few months ago). Sunrise replied prompty, verifying some things and a few days later my nowind arrived. So maybe there is a valid reason things are going slower?

Maybe there is. But I still can't get over the fact that I was probably the first person to order the modules and the only one who hasn't received them. And that some empty cartridges I bought even earlier haven't arrived yet, either.

Well, ahem... I'm missing the Nowind too.

Marq handled the order (as he lives nearby (only ~50km), I could get mine from him easily). Last time I ordered (only for me) some stuff from Sunrise a year or two ago. The waiting time for ordered items was long, almost two months. And it was some stuff which was not in developement stages, it was only laying on their shelf ready for shipping. There was no excuses for the delays and I had to E-mail several times that I got some replies how the order was proceeding. So, there is something odd how Sunrise handles the orders and replies E-mails.

And beside of being waiting patiently the Nowind to arrive... They have been paid already last year.

BTW, this is not the first, not second, or even third... product which has been very delayed when Marq orders something from Sunrise. So his ranting is very understandable (and as he mentioned, he hasn't still got his empty cartridge covers ordered from Sunrise even longer time ago than Nowind...). I have wondered several years why Marq has not been so happy with Sunrise, but MAYBE I was only lucky in the past getting somewhat faster deliveries. I'm not wondering anymore - so, some things corrected here.

In past I was a happy buyer of Sunrise products (since early/mid 90's). Nowadays, I'm not sure if "unhappy" is enough bad said. Not only speed of delivery varies from very long to horrible, but also the lack of communication is something I really can't understand.

Regarding 7MHz operation: it should work, but i'm having read errors when using in an MSX with the 7mhz "fast i/o" hack, that slows down only on vdp access and not all i/o like standard 7MHz kits do. For things like ATA-IDE this results in considerably more throughput.

Obviously this experience has nothing to do with the community as a whole, and there is no reason to aim your anger at it. We can’t help it either.

Not defending Sunrise, at all, but if some are downplaying the problems and asking for patience, it is because Sunrise has been a long standing value in the MSX world and has earned a lot of respect in the past, so even for us who haven’t spent money on a Nowind it’s upsetting to hear about it. I hope it will end well, is all I can do.

No need to be so sensitive. I merely stated the obvious -- it is a bad introduction to the community. You haven't seen angry from me.

I do wish people with no money on the line would refrain from the "just be patient" talk. You are just apologizing for bad behavior from Sunrise.

Hi linville and welcome to the MSX community. Although I'm not entirely new to this community and to MSX in general through emulation, I still consider myself new to MSX hardware. I've been slowly collecting various hardware and games only during the last 3 years or so and I am still very much a newbie when it comes right down to it. It's a great scene to be in and one that is very active and I've met some good friends here and have learned a lot in my time spent here. The overall MSX users here will be happy to help assist with what they can.

I'm sorry to hear that some of your experiences so far in regards to purchases made have not gone well and have turned you a bit off in terms of at least dealing with monetary transactions. MSX can be aferall a fairly expensive hobby to get into. I wanted to tell you though that even though I've only been purchasing MSX good for about 3 years now, I've ordered from several MSX scene based hardware and game retailers and have carried on multiple email conversations with several more who were all extremely helpful in answering any questions I had and making sure that I was completely satisfied with my purchases or would-be purchases. I've dealt with the MSX Cartridge Shop, Matra, Bitwise, PlaySoniq, Bas-Ditta, and 5+ transactions from members here on the forum, some of them multiple times even and they are all good, honest and honorable people to deal with and they know and understand the hobby as well as the value of these items not in just terms of expense, but in terms of what makes these special and/or rare. All of my experiences have been good experiences, even in my past dealings with Sunrise.

Now with Sunrise, even though the two orders came through in the end. They did take a very long time to get to me, over 2-3 months. The last time I ordered, I wasn't even sure I was ever going to get my items and at that point Rob was no longer answering my email. Even before I started dealing directly with Sunrise I was warned first hand that it sometimes takes awhile, but that Rob usually came through. I think that is why there are some folks here who may be defending him or at the very least waiting to see what happens because they still have faith that he will come through. But after reading this thread and hearing about how my friend had ordered some items over a year ago of significant value and for all intensive purposes has lost that money to bad business practices, it seems that Sunrise has indeed not honored several transactions. This is a shame to hear about because knowing this now, even though my experiences in the past have come through, there is no way I'd place an order again until I heard that all of these problems had been addressed for everyone affected.

I'm sorry to hear that you got burned here a long with so many others who appear to have been as well, but please don't take the actions of one person who is not running a very professional business anymore be the face of the MSX scene and community. There are many other MSX retailers who are honorable and very professional to deal with. Only it's a shame that some of these operations cannot offer some of the same items that Sunrise has, such as the Nowind. I sold my Nowind awhile back and I'd love to get another one in the newer design someday, but not if it has to go through Sunrise in their current state...

Isn't there someone here who still continues to have dealings on a personal basis with Rob at Sunrise who can just ask him in person what exactly is going on with all of this? I mean how can he expect to offer a product for sale on his site and not honor that sale? I do agree with linville that this does paint a very bad image for the MSX Scene in general and I would think that the MSX community would want to see that image repaired or at least a warning message on the site that tells folks that they should only order from Sunrise at their own risk until the matter is further researched. Wouldn't that make sense to do that until Sunrise can clean up their business model and earn that trust back?

Yes, these carts are really produced, I got one a few months ago (after a long wait, but some are waiting twice as long and still dont have theirs)
Sunrise's official website is also offline, which tells a sad story which cannot be denied. Let's all hope for the ones that still have an order running at Sunrise, that they will come through.

I would advice sending an email with what you ordered and when you paid with your details, can never hurt. Maybe he lost his overview of orders or what not.

I will never order at Sunrise anymore, untill they get their act back together. My next purchase will be a MegaflashRom SCC SD.

Something has definitely happened over there. And as Rob from Sunrise is not communicating with his customers (YES - customers, this all might be a hobby on MSX community, but when money is involved then there is always a seller and customer...), it's hard to know what. Has the money been wasted to something else? Was there error in calculating the end product price and now these are sold for cheaper than the production did cost (causing that all cartridges can't be delivered...)? Was there problems with a part of produced cartridges? Were there enough cartridges produced at all? Was the end goal for Rob raising the money and stopping sending items? Has Rob some personal problems? Drug issues? Gambling? Just too much work with all this? Burn-out?

Whatever has happened, it must have been there quite a while, because the issues with lack of communication and delivery speed has been continuing already for a long time. This is just the end point where some people seems to get no answers and neither the ordered items. I have been with community a long time and I have to admit that I was worried couple of times during past years how Sunrise copes with things. However, it looked like they were always getting products delivered after all and E-mails answered within some time range. Also, now it seems quite clear that the problems are not new, they might have been continuing several years in the background...

If someone could personally meet Rob and try to talk with him, it would be the best solution now. It looks like more or less all are not getting answers to E-mails. In easiest case Rob just needs help with sending items out... But the truth might be much worse. Also that's why it would be best if some close friend of Rob would carefully talk with him. Maybe he will then open up and tell at least a bit what is going on.

How is a release date of +/- mid-February until end of July "almost a year"? I think something went wrong with the calculator here Wink FYI it was said beforehand that it would be delivered not after payment but somewhere around xmas, but then it got delayed for whatever reasons, which they did send out an e-mail about.

So, of course it sucks that some ppl haven't received their nowinds yet but lets not exaggerate things. And about what is up with sunrise at the moment.. I don't know, I am as much in the dark as you guys.. I do hope/pray sunrise/rob is doing okay and that stuff gets delivered eventually.

I really think this:
- I may not believe that all stock has been produced, so they are producing the remaining... it takes much time;
- in this case, nobody have to know the truth, and the refund is not the solution because it's hard to pay the total amount.
So it's better to do silence and wait ;-)
