Don't know if we can port games of other systems easily to V9990 as Supersoniqs did with their Playsoniq (SMS->MSX).

I know MAME does use the OPL4 but what about the VDP? What system does use V9990 besides MSX? I know about the Colecovision V2 project with V9990 processor and the Kiwi project (which uses the Motorola CPU). This way we can play more games on V9990 with MSX if porting is possible. Problem with last two if that both have no specific V9990 gametitles yet... And Panasonic 3DO didn't have the V9990. This was a rumour.

3DO had a VGA-ish framebuffer which used dual port DRAMs. Because people saw these dual port DRAMs (same DRAMs the V9990 uses) made that stupid/idiotic assumption.

If it was like that, the first version of the PlayStation GPU also used dual ported DRAM. And no, the PS1 never used anything close to V9990 as video hardware... hehehe
The second version of the PS1 switched to SGRAM.

Wait are you saying the V9990 video hardware is way more superior than PlayStation 1 in terms of color, graphics power and capabilities? That the I could easily play PlayStation 1 quality games on an MSX computer.

wat?

All I said is that it used dual ported DRAM. (DRAM that can be accessed through two ports)

It's for allowing the CPU to access the parallel data side while the serial side is used for drawing the video RASTER.

edit:
V9990 is "crappy" if compared to the PlayStation GPU which is more like a sort of dumb frame buffer (I don't think it deserves be called a GPU) which has some acceleration for drawing squares filling areas and for drawing flat 2D shapes.

3D on the PlayStation is processed in the CPU using a co-processor called "GTE" (geometry engine).

Alas, the V9990, which seems to be heavily inspired on the Mega Drive VDP (also from Yamaha, FYI) could maybe use some sort of external acceleration for 3D shapes if someone were to do anything of the sort (similar to how 3D was done on the Super Nintendo with a external RISC CPU on a cartridge) because of the DUAL PORTED RAM allowing one to write to the video memory more often than what is possible on V9938/58...

If V99389/58 had such RAM one could change stuff on the VRAM during screen drawing time.

What we have now (the V9990) is actually very good for the system we have, but we kind of lack the mindset to actually tackle it and take advantage of it. People need to look around and see how the other systems (NES/Famicom, Mega Drive, Super Nintendo) did their thing and learn.

btw, i'm still very interested on coding something for v9990 via Boriel’s ZX-Basic Compiler (in the same way i contributed with Libreway and CMJN at Karoshi’s MSXDev’14) - if someone can help me letting me know if the libraries i started at http://nitrofurano.altervista.org/retrocoding/msx/ are fine, please do!
