Sony PVM-20m4e / PVM-14m4e via RGB, seem to be having SYNC issues

I'm trying to connect my Philips NMS 8280 to either the Sony PVM-20m4e or PVM-14m4e.

I also have a Philips CM8533 and the NMS connected via SCART with the CM8533 set to RGB results in a nice picture.

To connect it to either PVM's I created a SCART to 4BNC cable as the PVM's require RGB + SYNC and connected it via the following chain:

NMS 8280 [SCART] ==> [SCART ]SCART SWITCH [SCART]==> [4x BNC] PVM

So far I connected the following pins:

7 | Blue
11 | Green
15 | Red
19 | VOUT / Composite Video Out / RGB Sync

I first had pin SCART 20 connected but it didn't have any signal after that I connected pin 19. It sort of works but the image isn't very stable. Most of the time it looks as if SYNC isn't working.

To rule out that the scart switch is causing issues I've checked it by connecting the CM8533 via the switch and that has a good stable image.

I have the Sony PVM's set to:

- Line / RGB: On
- Ext Sync: On
- A / RGB: On

Anyone here with a similar setup that works just fine? Maybe any of the the signal values require a resistor because the level is too high?

Any tips are welcome.

I have a Sony F1XDJ connected to a Sony PVM through a SCART adaptor here and it works fine. Have you been able to test the monitor with another RGB source?

Don't remember my switch settings exactly, I'll check them a bit later and let you know.

Which PVM do you have it connected to Louthrax?

With SCART adapter you mean SCART to 4xBNC (RGBS)? Does it have a sync stripper or does it use the composite signal for SYNC?

Unfortunately, I don't have other RGB sources but as I bought both the 14" and 20" from different people and getting the same result I think it is an issue with either my cable. I also want to connect my Amiga's to it but I first have to modify my Amiga RGB to SCART cable to include a resistor on the composite signal to prevent damage to the SYNC port.

Try adding LM1881 between VOUT and monitor.

I'm jusing this very simple adapter:

It's plugged this way on the monitor:

The only buttons that are pushed on the front panel are "LINE/RGB" and "SYNC INT/EXT".

Not sure about my PVM's model name, but it's this one:

That is very similar to mine. Could you share to which female SCART pin the SYNC/COMPOSITE BNC is connected?

I probably have a bad signal on my SCART to BNC breakout. Also, are those wires shielded?

The BNC SYNC should be connected to female pin 19 (pin 20 is for male plugs, that's often a source of confusion when making you own cables !).

Shielding should not have a big impact on a short cable like this one, or at least should not break the display completely.

EDIT: Just noticed you already mentionned pin 19 in your first post. Have you checked if the SYNC ground is connected (pin 17 on SCART)? It could be that the monitor requires that.

As I had similar issues when trying to connecting the PVM to my Amiga's it had to be an issue with my SCART to BNC breakout cable. As suggested I soldered the SCART ground pins to all BNC connectors too and it has resolved the SYNC issue.

So as Louthrax mentioned, grouding SYNC is required. Not sure if the others are required too but those are grounded too.

I've made a recording of the PVM when zoomed in. Had to use my DSLR for that otherwise the PVM refreshrate was conflicting a bit.

Here a example of the current quality:

It is a good christmas so far :-D

While having is connected via RGB on such a low resolution it is clear that my 20" PVM needs some calibration as "Red" needs seems to be shifted a little bit to the right on the screen overall.

Not sure how to do that :-) but I'll start with googling "calibrating sony pvm".

Thanks for the help!

Nice Smile I have some "BIAS" and "GAIN" buttons for R, G & B on the front of my PVM, never played with them yet (my guess is that they are more likely to adjust the intensity, not the shift). Maybe there's a "factory settings"' menu, let me know if you find something.
