Truth be told, I don't know of a single other game that utilizes my system's turbo mode. Tales of Popolon is the first I've played, AFAIK.

Hi Sationtanon,
Thanks for your nice e-mail. I have added the game online and it can be played here:
http://www.file-hunter.com/MSX/Top.html

Please note that my site will have some downtime today.
I will also keep an eye on this thread and update the file when needed. Thanks for making this great game!

LOL.. Just updated the page to make the game run on 7,14Mhz. It's much smoother now! :)

Yes, this is normal operation of that turbo circuit... Only way to fix it is to divide the frequency before writing PSG.

oh wow, ok!! dividing the frequencies in case turbo is on (doubling the intervals, actually) is trivial, so that's an easy fix!

But just to make sure I can verify my fix, when I try this with a Panasonic_FS-A1WX in OpenMSX 0.13 there is no changes in the PSG frequency (not sure if I am setting anything wrong, or if this is an unemulated feature), so, I will post a version here so you can try before I update the release Smile

@tfh: and yeah! if you want the game to run smoother, set it to run on a Turbo R. The game will detect it and make it run on the R800 Smile

OK, got a strange new bug for you now!

I finally got to the second boss, which I assume is Medusa (and looks freaking awesome, BTW!), and was fighting her with ice arrows and stabbing until I ran out of blue hearts, panicked, and started to just stabby-stab and hope for the best. Wink

Presumably, I beat her, because a key dropped... but instead of disappearing, she turned into two snakes stacked on top of one another: a green one on bottom, and a white one on top. I thought these were new enemies that had spawned from her corpse or something, so I started to stab them, at which point they turned back into Medusa again and started attacking me... again. I had almost no health at this point, though, so I died, but the Game Over screen looked odd: it was horizontally striped black and blue, and when I pressed a key to return to the title screen, the graphics for the entire game were totally glitched out: the wrong colors, horizontal lines all over the place (on the bottom of the screen especially)... though I was still able to start a new game, and when I did so, only the HUD on the bottom of the screen continued to be glitched out: the rest looked normal.

Not sure I'll ever be able to reproduce this, and I can't exactly say what the exact conditions were that triggered it, but again -- figured I'd let you know!

Sorry to keep replying here with bug reports, but again, I'd like to give the disclaimer that I'm only reporting so many bugs because I actually really like this game, and want to see it "perfected." Wink I certainly don't fault it for having bugs, as you're doing stuff here that I don't think the MSX was ever meant to do, so the existence of weird, unexpected side-effects is only natural. And the fact that it runs as smoothly as it does is nothing short of amazing -- I'm still impressed by how good the hit detection and AI behavior is, and how natural the controls feel.

hahaha, no worries about bug reports! and really, really thanks for the kind words! Big smile

I'll look into it. Medusa actually does spawn snakes (she turns to stone after a while and right before doing so spawns one snake). But don't worry, I'll look into it! Smile

[edit: oh! yes, I see the bug! I Was trying to save some bytes in the last version and I changed something that broke an assumption that the Medusa code was making, will push the new version as soon as I test it, to make sure that was the only source of the problem]

Ok, I think the medusa bug is fixed. Updated version here: https://github.com/santiontanon/talesofpopolon/releases/tag/...

(I did not change the version number, since it's just one bugfix, but I've a new version coming with some other updates)

Medusa's ass has been kicked without incident! Wink Though she didn't actually spawn a snake at all this time, as far as I could tell -- but then again, she might've, and I might've just killed it instantly, as I kind of cheesed the battle (I went around killing grunts on the first floor over and over again until I had full health and 3 blue hearts, and then just ice-arrowed Medusa and rapid-fire stabbed her in quick succession until she died).

Made it to what I guess is the final battle now? Based on what the stone face told me as I walked down the hall, anyway. Little confused, though, as the story text keeps mentioning the Gorgon, and even says that I killed the Gorgon, but... did I? Was that what the first boss was? Because the stone face that warns you about the Gorgon doesn't appear until AFTER the point when you beat the first boss, which seems like odd timing if that is indeed what the first boss was.

Also, are there supposed to be two of the final boss? Because I'm totally fighting two creatures in that room. Which is kind of cool and intense, but also seems a little odd, since nothing in the story has really prepared me for that...

Also also, as an aside: the high-octave music from playing the game on an MSX2+ with turbo enabled actually kind of works, but makes it feel like a totally different setting. Instead of gods and demons, I feel like I should be in a feudal Japanese castle fighting samurai and ninja. Wink

Medusa is a Gorgon. I don't know if there are any others in the game.

Oh. Damn. For some reason, that never even occurred to me.

I fail at Greek mythology. Wink
