Obviously an Amiga 500 has better sound and gfx than an MSX2. However, like probably most MSX users, I don't think that's the entire ball game. For instance, I find Hyper Rally to be a very good car racer, because of the racing-feeling you get when you play it. Outrun was originally popular because of the same reason, iirc. That's what I'm hoping to find back in Ponyca's version, because that's what I read about it on various sites. But maybe that's a little personal as well. Anyway, I'll find out shortly, because it should arrive any day now.

Outrun. I really like that game. The MSX 2 version is very awesome. And only from Japan. I can't find a link to buy that game. But the gameplay on YouTube seems really cool. Crying

I think that OutRun is not a good conversion from MSX2, Hyper Rally has more solid playability being a simple 16Kb ROM.

Why. It is better then the MSX 1 version. See how it looks.

MSX 2 version.

MSX 1 version.'

But yeah. Actually I like the Mega Drive or Saturn version much better. :P

Just like Rastan Saga, the OutRun for the MSX2 was a poor port of the Master System version.

But at least the SMS version had cool FM music support if an OPLL was present. And, of course, there's the fantastic version with 3D glasses support.

Note: on Youtube you can change the 3D glasses type under "options". I.e.: have this nice kit from DX that allows me to watch both side-by-side and color coded movies.

The only thing I don't like of the MSX 2 version of OutRun is the music, even the MSX 1 speccy version has better music, and I don't know why they didn't use FM (Any hacker there?). But I like the game a lot :-)

there is also a youtube user who created the outrun music in a better way on the MSX. Cool

The original OutRun arcade was completely disassembled, and the guy who did the work ported the game to c++. This is not a remake, it's the original arcade code ported to c++.

If anyone wants to write a better outrun for msx, this is a great starting point.

Pretty cool! Too bad it doesn't compile on my gcc 4.9.1 Tongue

I don't think the original code translated to C++ is a good starting point for Outrun on MSX.
The only way to put something resembling Outrun on MSX is to re-imagine it and code it from scratch imho.

As an aside, I noticed Chris White is the main author of this C++ translation.
He worked on my own emulator a few years ago and managed to get the original Outrun working on it, which is no small feat because at the time the 68000 emulator had a nasty addressing bug which he managed to work around (without touching the 68K core). That guy knows his stuff.
