As it was (somehow sneakily) announced recently, the source code of the MSX assembler Compass is now online. This is awesome since not only can we now learn how such a wonderful tool was made, but it also opens to door to eventually further improve it if someone dares.

The problem is that the code comments in the published sources are written entirely in Dutch, and this of course dramatically decreases the pool of people that can understand what's going on. Thus I decided that something had to be done... and I did: I forked the repository and created a pull request in which all the code comments have been translated to English.

Now, as you all know I have some superpowers, but understanding Dutch is not one of them. What I did was to write a script that walked through all the code lines, detected the comments, passed them to the Google Translate API and modified the code file with the result.

Of course the result is far from perfect. I have done a light review of the generated translations to fix and improve obvious mistakes (for example "slot" was translated as "lock" for some reason) but the result is still weird and even almost absurd in some cases, as expected from an automatic translation.

And this is where you, my dear Dutch-speaking MSX lover, can chime in and help! You can take a look at the changes in the pull request (read access is available for everybody), and if you decide that you want to contribute in the improvement of the translation, I can add you as a collaborator in the fork. Then you'll be able to either push changes yourself, or to write comments suggesting changes that I can apply myself. Whatever you prefer.

So that's the thing. Who's up for the challenge?

Slot translated into lock makes perfect sense. But it can also mean ending. Or a castle. Very versatile word actually.

I've added some comments to the first file's changes. This will take a while, and I can't promise I have the time or spoons to review all of the changes, but I'll contribute whatever thoughts I have.

Much appreciated, many thanks!

By the way, contrary to what I wrote, of course anyone with a GitHub account can post comments in the pull request; being added as a contributor to the repository is only needed to directly push changes. Sorry, it was late and I was tired. Smile

I saw the pull request but didn't have time to respond to it yet.
Nice to see that opening Compass gathered this interest. I will merge the pull request in a few days. That way I can have a look at it myself Wink and if any other linguistic changes are made by then they will be picked up as well.

Awesome, thanks! I have created it in "draft" state precisely to give some time for all the translations to be reviewed. There's no need to rush for the merge, it's better to wait until the thing has good quality translated comments in all the files. Smile

I tried to build Compass from the sources (with Compass, heh), I get a COMPASS.COM and a COMPASS.DAT that are the same size of the originals, I run COMPASS.COM and I see the CTNG logo, then the initial startup messages, then the editor screen for a split second... and then the screen turns into vertical bars and the computer freezes. Can a working version be assembled from these sources? Am I doing something wrong? (I followed the "howto.txt" file)

Ok, found that "codename" in MAIN129.ASC is all zeros in my assembled version but something different in my working copy. I guess that's part of the copy protection mechanism?

Tada! I removed "call prtcodename" in EDIT126.ASC and now it works! Running Naked in a Field of Flowers
