TNI made some game a while back on msx2, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn3KGZr34jk, the speed is very nice but diagonal walls don't really have convincing movement animation, so at times it feels as if you are standing still.I guess some floor animation would help.

Thanks! Big smile

When I saw the TNI demo, which works using a predefined tileset I believe, for a few days I tried to see if I could make it look the way I wanted. But with a predefined tileset, I think TNI's demo is the best you can get. So, I then decided to go for raycasting. I searched online to see if there was any other engines, and the only one I could find was ARTRAG's robot demo for Turbo R. For Spectrum there are at least a couple of games that I was quite impressed with:
- Micronaut one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8gtajpc89s (this one is quite impressive IMHO!)
- Spectrum Doom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW_XDSFdn-4

But I don't know if the latter is real or not, since I haven't found the ROM or source code anywhere. There is a ROM in world of spectrum, but it looks VERY different from that video!

Finally had a chance to check this out (it plays nearly perfectly on my system now, through either loadrom or odo, with the one caveat being that I have an extra black square appearing just below and to the right of the word "GOD" on the HUD for some reason -- though this doesn't impact gameplay in any way), and I have to say, I'm super-impressed. I wasn't expecting there to be so much variety in the environments, with decorative statues and even animated dudes in chains hanging from the walls. And even though I've only gotten to the third floor, I'm super-impressed at the huge variety of enemies so far, too.

Really, really nice work! Well-designed all around. Feels like it could easily be Konami's long-lost Knightmare IV. Wink

Thanks wyrdwad!! really appreciate those comments! Big smile

Variety will go a bid down from there though, hahaha, I think there is only one more enemy type (other than the bosses) from the point where you are Smile

Also, about the black square, which hardware configuration are you using? to see if I can reproduce. It might probably be some memory initialization issue.

Running the game on a Panasonic FS-A1WX MSX2+ system with the base 64kb RAM and 128kb VRAM, off of a disk via loadrom or odo (the black square was present when I used either loader).

Might have been junk in memory from MSX-DOS or something, so I'll check it again sometime today and let you know if it's happening consistently.

Man. Been playing more, and is the game supposed to not save your sword when you enter a password? Not only am I empty-handed after I enter a password, the treasure chest containing the sword on the first floor is no longer there, so I can't get the sword again either! That's just mean. Sad

Also, a bit of an oddity that I noticed: there's a mirror wall on the first floor, just around the corner from the stairs to the second floor. When I went back down to check and see if I could get the sword again, though, that particular mirror wall had changed to a tortured prisoner instead. Is that supposed to happen?

Ah! yeah, you do have the sword! it's just that the password does not save which was the sword you had equipped, but it does save which ones you own. So, you can re-select it again by pressing "1" (change main weapon), "2" (change secondary weapon), and "3" (change armor). What I could probably do, is to make you start with the "best" equipment you own, rather than with the default one. Added to the "to-do" list Smile

About the mirror wall turned into a prisoner, that's clearly a bug! I overwrite textures when entering different levels since I don't have enough RAM to store them all at once, and I probably missed that particular overwrite Smile

Oh! That makes total sense. I forgot all about that function. Thanks!

I agree, having it start you with the best equipment when you enter a password would make a lot of sense. But yeah, that was totally my bad!

Also, I confirmed that the black square below and to the right of the word "GOD" is still present every single time I play the game, so it's definitely a consistent issue, whatever it is. Again, it doesn't seem to have any bearing on the gameplay whatsoever, and most people aren't going to be playing on a basic Japanese machine with 64kb RAM anyway, so there's probably no need to concern yourself too much with it -- but just figured I'd let you know it's there!

Thanks for being so responsive to feedback/questions! Hope I'm not annoying you (yet). Wink

haha, not at all! I'm quite excited about the game, so, I'm just excited to get feedback! Big smile

I might probably not have time to check it until Thursday (I'm going on a trip tomorrow). But I'll definitively will look into the black box thing. Even if it doesn't affect gameplay, I just want to make sure that I know why is it cause, to make sure there is no deeper bug in the code Smile
