AX-660 and AX-990 don't have S1985. It uses specific chips with a PSG (File KC89C72) and a Z80 both external.

It's amazing to see an MSX1 with a V9958. It looks even like there's 64kB of VRAM in both.

The AX-330 uses four 64 x 4bit RAM (TMS4464-15). So I think we can consider this to be the case for the other two as well. All three have 64 kB of VRAM. Sakhr may have had these cheaper memories. The AX-660 and AX-990 should be easy to upgrade to MSX2, even see MSX2+, except maybe for the battery and the RTC.

Popolon_ says it works or does he just say it's a VHDpc compatible player?
The flyer seems to say that it is indeed a VHDpc player but that is not supported by the IF-7900 interface.

Both texts are complementary I think and we can conclude that HD-7800 does not have the VHDpc logo.

Manual:

Thank you for purchasing the JVC VHD Interface IF-7900.
This IF-7900 can be combined with JVC MSX personal computer (with superimpose function), JVC VHD video disk player and his VHD language video disk (both with VHDpc mark) to enable interactive operation in VHD language.
In addition, the built-in extended BASIC allows the VHD player to be controlled by an MSX computer. In this case, the interactive function by VHD language is not possible, but if you use the superimpose function of MSX PC, you can enjoy the same function depending on the programming. At this time, VHD players with 13-pin external control terminals (HD-7800, HD 7900, BD-7950) can be used."

Flyer:

●The HD-7900 has a VHDpc mark. All video discs with VHD and VHDpc marks can be used. Use a PC HC-7 or HC-6 for the Video Disc Player HD-7900. ●Please note that video discs with the VHDpc mark cannot be used with the video disc player HD-7100(B), HD-7500(B), and HD-7800."

So it means that the extra RAM, not usable on MSX1, is there for the NES or Sega part.

The minimum of vram for V9958/V9938 is 64Kb. Seems logic..

That is not true, the minimum VRAM for MSX2 is 64kB but there are MSX1 machines with V9938 with only 16kB VRAM (as an MSX1 will only need 16kB VRAM). 16kB VRAM again is the minimum for MSX1 (and the maximum for TMS9918 series) but the TMS9918 VDP (and as such also the Yamaha V9938/58) can be configured with less than 16kB. Less modes will be usable of course.

From the TMS9900 datasheet: The dynamic RAM interface consists of direct wiring of eight 4Kx1, 8Kx1 or 16Kx1 dynamic RAS/CAS-type RAMs to the VDP. The amount of RAM required is dependent upon the features selected for use in the application.

You are CORRECT! VR select also has 16kb x 1bit / 16kb x 4bit
