Hey! I wanna make a sort of pool with the best MSX1 games without megaram or megarom.
I will start with these:

- Head Over Heels
- The Castle Excellent
- Jet Set Willy 2
- King's Valley
- Knightmare
- The Goonies
- Payload
- Bokosuka Wars
- Jack The Nipper
- Dungeon Master
- The Price of Magik

unfortunatelly, few of these are original games. most are conversions or remakes Sad

You mean original for MSX?
There are hundreds of MSX-only games, or games that have been ported to other platforms later...
Ofcourse this also depends on what area you're in.. In Japan a lot of games were released on MSX and on other japanese-only computers like PC8801, etc..
So what to us europeans seems an MSX-only game, might exist on more platforms in japan.

i wanna make the pool with all msx 1 games. i was only lamenting about many portings on msx (lack of originallity)

PC88 made a lot of games first. MSX only ported them
the same counts for ZX Spectrum, Comodore 64 and Colecovision yet...

Computers don't make games...

Besides, MSX was developed to make an end to the wildgrowth of microcomputers in the early 80's. So it's only logical MSX recieved a lot of ports.

Let's not forget that the MSX ports of games (I mean proper ports, not conversions) are usually better than the 'originals'.

Manic Miner
Jet Set Willy
Hyper Sports 1
Road Fighter
Knightmare
Athletic Land
Payload

There's some..

If someone has manual for Payload I could really use a scan of the Map of Japan it has. I'm missing couple pages of my manual and those pages has the map which is needed to play the game. Sad

I like MARS II for MSX.

It was published on MSX-FAN DISK MAGAZINE and now it is possible to download this game direct from the developer site.

Manic Miner
Jet Set Willy

Manic Miner: Absolutely. It's a 99.9% copy of the original Spectrum version.
Jet Set Willy: Practically the same as the Spectrum version Too bad they removed
the "If I were a rich man" song from JSW. Probably because of copyrights.

I dont think they ever typed the source of these games on spectrum. While a very good game machine, Spectrum was a bad machine for developers in the sense that the rubber keyboard didn't help them much.

I think they must have used another machine like msx/amstrad (they both had a z80 right?) and then they ported the code to zx spectrum. If someone was a programmer there would be madness to type in thousands of lines of code in an assembler program on a rubber keyboard spectrum. On the other hand msx/amstrad and other z80 machines had great keyboards suitable for typing huge listings of asm code.

Am i right?

Sort of.., although there're some notable exceptions, the majority of developers did work over PC compatibles(or at least big machines), using cross assemblers and transferring the data through serial connections, some them even use harddisks!
AFAIK Matthew Smith develops MM using only his old rubber keyboard speccy. Those were the years! Smile

I still haven't seen an electronic ping pong game that's nearly as much fun as Konami's Ping Pong. And I'm even counting the most recent game for xbox 360 - rockstar table tennis

Yup, this is a nice game. Did you know that it was written in BASIC? Probably it is ML, but the game can be LISTed in BASIC (where you can see that much data is written into the memory, which is probably why it's so fast - probably ML, but I don't remember very well).
