Batten Tanuki No Daibouken : Anyone have an idea what the goal is ?

I got this thing running about a year ago, but I can't quite seem to figure out where to go, I just go from one edge of the screen to the next, while getting my health drained by legions of respawning enemies I can only rarely, if ever, kill.

Too bad too because this one looks like something I'd enjoy.
