How to distribute modified commercial games?

A patch is the more 'clean' way (and in theory I'd prefer that): legally safe, should be smaller file, just contains what was modified, useless to people that don't have an original. You could even claim copyright on a patch (and sell it if you like), while you can't possibly claim copyright on a patched version of someone else's work.

Patched full version is less elegant, but more practical for MSX uses. File sizes aren't a problem, and the legalities become the same as distribution of the original product. Which personally, I think everyone should decide for themselve(s). For myself, I try to ignore copyright law as much as possible. And yes: I do buy music, DVD's or software from time to time. It's just that copyrights are not a significant factor in the decision.

How bad is it when you see a beautiful sunset and the first thing which goes through your mind is "Wow, looks just like Ys III!"

I am happy, when sky has at least one of these COLORs: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 or 15.

I am not geek, just an old MSX owner.

I can imagine the problem with IPS patches is you have to apply them to a certain version of the game you want to patch. But it's not always clear which file you can patch. And more important, where to find that file.

About the commercial aspect. I've totally given up on that one. Of course there still is commercial interest in old software, just look at all the games you can play on WII or look at EGG. But I'm sure companies are not interested in what a silly internet community consisting of mainly 30+ male nerds are up to. In other words, we are too obscure.

My wife would 100% agree with this definition of the current MSX scene. Especially the "silly" part.
