Hi everyone, new member from Athens, Greece here!
New to the forum but not at all new to MSX and "retro" computers in general... Putting this under brackets, as I am using 8 (and later 16) bit computers non-stop, since 1984...
Been following the forum as a guest for long time on new releases, conversions etc., now I decided to create my own account!
Already own lots of "retro" gear of almost any flavor, but the MSX part of my collection consists of Sanyo MPC 100, Philips VG 8020, NMS 8245, NMS 8280 and Sony HB F700. Great machines the MSX range, I love them, even though I am originally considered mostly as a ZX Spectrum guy (first loves last forever...)
Also own a Spectravideo SV 318 and a Memotech MTX 512, which are roughly MSX-related...

Wish you all happy Xmas holidays and a HUMANLY BEARABLE upcoming 2022, full of health, love and creativity!!
Wink

Hi there kokkiklhs, nice to have you on board! Smile
Same wishes to you, and I hope you'll have a lot of fun here.
Could you tell us a bit about the '80s retro computer scene in Greece? I guess MSX wasn't really well known around there.
And are you mostly into gaming, in coding or maybe tinkering with hardware?
Greetings,
John

Hi John, thanks for the welcome!
I am mostly into gaming and fiddling with HW repairs, unfortunately no coding at all...
The computing scene during the eighties here mostly praised the "holy trinity" of Spectrum-Amstrad-Commodore, as in the most of Europe... but you could find almost any other major/minor computer brands in the shops (and most of them officially represented), from Atari, Acorn, Apple, Texas Instruments, Dragon, Tandy and Oric, to Jupiter Ace, Newbrain, SVI, Memotech, even Laser, Sord and BIT-90... The users of "unusual" machines were very few, though!

As for the MSX, I remember that there was an exclusive representative of Philips (ΦΙΛΙΠΣ Ελληνική - Ε.Λ.Ε.Α), i.e. Greek PHILIPS - E.L.E.A, which previously FULLY supported the Videopac (even with TV ads) and later the Philips MSX range, with software, peripherals, books (including Greek-translated manuals) and everything. I rarely saw a Japanese MSX machine for sale in a Greek shop (or even an ad) back then, Sony/Panasonic/JVC etc. were well known brands here, but not for computers. We mostly had Philips and SVI MSX and I think only Sanyo was officially represented. Most Japanese machines that made it to Greece must have been from professional sailors, travelling to the Far East and bringing them to their homes... There were also some Korean MSX models advertised in the mid/late eighties, like Goldstar or Daewoo...
However, the MSX commercial success here back in the days was not significant, due to the serious UK/US rivals...
...and then came the Amiga!!!
LOL!

Welcome to this forum! I admire you owning a real MTX. Have you ever typed Greek with a localized keyboard like this SC-3000?

Welcome kokkiklhs!
I hope You'll find Your pleasant place among MSX users.
If You are confortable with HW repairs, that's super useful, I struggle with +/-12V circuitries and unresponsive keyboards.
Ciao!

Thank you all for the welcome, fellas!!
@Takamichi, no, not at all... No localized keyboards with Greek character set back then, first time we saw something like that was on the DOS PCs...

Hi Niko, thank you for sharing this memory... I remember ASPECO as well, as a name... I was not at all into the MSX scene back then, but anyway, those were the days...!!! Wink
