European MSX in the US

Hi all,
I just brought a Canon V-20 from Europe. Any recommendations on how to use it properly in the US? What voltage step down converter should I use (planning to bring my Amiga 500 too next time)? Is there a rule based on the power of the machine (3 x Watts)?

What about the video? I have the SCART cable. Does it make sense to buy an OSSC? Any other options?

Thanks

You just need 220 or 240V, it should be on the sticker on the back.
I don't think this model has RGB output so you will need something that can handle PAL composite video.

https://www.msx.org/wiki/Canon_V-20_(EU) seems to indicate 230V 50Hz. 220 or 240V is probably fine too.

Good to see it made it to the US Wink

I think something like this will be your best choice. It’s a bit pricey and overspecified but they use toroidal coils in these bigger models. They are therefore silent (cheaper models tend to “hum”). You can fetch a customer return for under $30.

Most TVs sold here in Europe with composite input (well old models those are obviously) will accept PAL and NTSC. I can’t imagine models in the US to only accept NTSC (especially when it’s a Japanese or Korean brand). You can probably score an old CRT or 4:3 LCD cheap. If you want to use a modern TV the best choice is a RetroTink 2X-MINI, although a bit pricey.

Thank you Manuel.

Yes, I made it back to the US Peter ;-) I was able to enjoy the machine while on vacation in Spain and I don't want the fun to stop now that I'm back home. I'm going to purchase the voltage transformer for sure and probably get the 2X-Mini too (out of stock as of now).

From an initial research, it doesn't look like it's easy to find CRTs that support PAL in the US. I also found this article: https://nicole.express/2021/pal-in-the-usa.html

Anyway, I truly appreciate your assistance and the work you are doing for the community.

Okay it says many flat panels do accept PAL (as I would expect) just not his (a US made model I believe). So it is definitely worth a shot. In the mean time something like this could get you through the summer or at least until the 2X-MINI is available again!

I will try with my current flat panel once I get the voltage transformer. As you said it's definitely worth a shot.

Thanks again Peter
