Korean hardware developer sharksym has created a third generation of MMC/SD drive that brings quite a few changes compared to its predecessors. For its new design, MSX-DOS 1 compatibility was removed, as well as SCC, PCM and MultiROM support. That might sound like quite a step backwards, until you take a look at the improvements this MMC/SD drive V3 has to offfer:

  • Added SDHC port (and one microSD) and faster SPI
  • Added 512kB SRAM and MegaRAM mode
  • Support for partitions up to 8GB
  • Replaced DISKMAN 2DD emulation
  • Tuned R800 DRAM mode that reaches more than 500kByte/sec (!)
  • Scanline effect mode for real MSX computers connected to LCD screens

Particularly the boost in speed, from just over 300kByte/sec in standard R800 DRAM mode to well over 500kByte/sec in tuned R800 DRAM mode is seriously impressive. The most recent BIOS currently available in v5.14 and together with the most recent tool package (v1.14) the changes since its initial release are as follows:

  • Added support for WSX 5.37Mhz turbo and R800 DRAM mode
  • PCM audio player for turboR (8bit 44.1kHZ)
  • Added option to remove MSX-MUSIC if you want to enjoy PSG only
  • Added reboot function of the DSK emulation mode
  • Added detection of Koei (SRAM) and Lupin III mapper
  • Added Koei (SRAM) SUB-ROM support for mapper, including save/load additions
  • Xanadu SRAM support for the SUB-ROM
  • Added commandline switch for character handling, allowing switching between Japanese, Korean, European and Russian character sets
  • Improved handling of characters in GameRunner, fixing issues with Dungeon Master

An extensive user manual is available in both English and Korean, downloadable in PDF format from this page.

Good question, given the changes in hardware I would assume the v5.xx BIOS is for v3 drives and the v4.xx BIOS is for v2 drives.

I'd be interested in obtaining a v3 interface as well, by the way. Is someone already planning to get a small batch to Europe?

MSX-DOS 1 compatibility was removed, as well as SCC

Also no support for MSX1 and a cartridge SCC is required to play games with SCC sound.

I think the old version was better choice. Sacrificed and removed many extension, for benefit a better speed at turboR mode. Will be better than old version if you own only a turboR. I own a turboR, but I prefer something for using with every MSX1&2 of my collection.
Shocked!

I do agree that the V3 offers most benefits on turboR., but SDHC, scanline effect and MegaRAM are additions that do work on MSX2 and higher, so I don't think it's such a big step back to be honest.
