Those who keep an eye on our forums probably have noticed that over the last days, Alexey has started several threads on various MSX breadboards being available in small batches for very low prices. Although not all of these projects are designed by Alexey, we think him offering this hardware deserves some extra attention.

  • First, there is a project to port MSX1 games to SV-328 and SVI-328 computers. Alexey made a batch of boards for himself and he is selling 6 of them. You can find more info and pictures right here
  • Then there is a project adding the F4 flag port to the Z80, which is important when you want to upgrade your MSX2 to MSX2+. The MSX2+ BIOS requires this port. Usually making this port when converting MSX2 computers to MSX2+ requires heavy rewiring of system's logic and adding new components on top of existing ones. It appears that Kamil Karimov (a.k.a Caro) has designed a simple board that could add F4 register to MSX2+ without major hassle. All you need is to solder 4 microchips in SOP form factor and a few SMD components on a small board and then connect this board to Z80's outputs. You can find more info and pictures right here
  • Alexey made a batch of MSX cartridge breadboards for prototyping. Due to a mistake most of the holes appeared to be smaller size than needed. The microchips in DIP casing can be easily installed onto the board but some components with thick pins can't get through. He is selling 7 boards. You can find more info and pictures right here
  • Last but not least, Alexey made a batch of boards for Wozblaster revision 2 (Moonsound clone). There are 8 boards available. The Wozblaster on this board was assembled and tested already by Dmitry Pugachev. You can find more info and pictures right here

And also the video converter :)
(EDIT)

Just wanted to add that I think its a very nice service (and cheap) that Alexey provides.

My Yamaha CX5MII now sports a nice 1024K RAM! Smile

If you have a CX-7 motherboard version, the RAM board will work no problem. It’s super-easy to install. Use a small flat screwdriver or pin to pry open the four clamps in the slits on the back side of the machine, and it will open. Then just remove the old RAM module, put in the new one (carefully align pins to the connector), and it’s done!

Now, if someone would make a 128K VRAM module… ;)

The biggest question is - can the logic on CX5M board handle 4464 chips? Personally I doubt that, besides, the pinouts are different. So as the board assumes the usage of 4164 chips, you need 8 of them to make 64kb. Not sure they can fit all on the small external board.

So if I were you and wanted to expand the VRAM, I would first install sockets on the motherboard and put 8 4164 chips there. Then you would at least have 80kb of VRAM with external board. But then you probably need a patched BIOS that supports more graphics screens with the increased memory. Unless the BIOS automatically unlocks new screens with memory increase, which I doubt. But I am not an expert, so this is a pure theory.

And, as Jipe said, you can make a new external board with a pair of 4464 chips. So together with on-board 4164s, you can have 128kb. That is not too complicated if the 4464 have just to be connected to the corresponding connector pins.

Can you please send 2 high resolution pics of your external VRAM board and the dimensions to my email? I might want to try to design such a board and let the experts cbeck whether it will work...

I created the schematics and prototype of 64kb VRAM board for Yamaha CX5MII:
