We have finally reached the grand finale of our quest to the best MSX game song ever. After the nominations started on July 27th, we had a lot to vote for in our forums. First, we looked for the two best PSG songs. As you can see in the results, two songs from Konami's game Treasure of Usas won, being the songs for the Juba Ruins and Mohenjo Daro levels. After that, we started looking for the best SCC game song ever. Needless to say, Konami won this sub-poll as well. Over here you can view the results of this sub-poll. Both SD-Snatcher's Viral introdemo (the part where you see the Lucifer-alpha accident happening in Moscow) and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake's Second introdemo will be representing the SCC songs in the finale. Today the visitors of our forums decided which two MSX-MUSIC songs were moving on to the frontpage poll we just started. As you can see in the results of the MSX-MUSIC sub-poll these songs will be the Second introdemo song of Microcabin's Illusioncity and the introdemo song of Falcom's DragonSlayer VI. Now it is up to you to decide which is the very best MSX game song ever. You can cast your vote on our frontpage.

In our previous poll, we asked our visitors 'What does MSX stand for?'. 286 people did cast their votes. Let's have a look at the results:

  • 1. MicroSoft eXtended (40.91%)
  • 2. Machines with Software eXchangeability (25.52%)
  • 3. Matsushita Sony X-machine (21.68%)
  • 4. More Software, less eXpensive (4.55%)
  • 5. Multinucleate Sphere X (3.15%)
  • 6. Matsushita and Sony shake hands (2.45%)
  • 7. Midcourse Space eXperiment (1.75%)

Throughout the years there has been a lot of discussion on the true meaning of the letters MSX. In the 1980's the only known meaning was 'MicroSoft eXtended', referring to the MSX-BASIC that came with every MSX Computer. However, in Japan there were rumours that MSX actually stood for Matsushita Sony X-machine, referring to two big companies that supported MSX the most. Matsushita Sony shake hands was another explanation, as it was not common for those companies to co-operate at all.

In Tilburg 2001, Kazuhiko Nishi told the visitors of his lecture the original meaning is and always has been Machines with Software eXchangeability, referring to the fact that the brand of computer did not matter on MSX. Software developed for a Philips MSX1 should also work on a Sony MSX1, and mostly it did. According to him Microsoft pushed the MicroSoft eXtended explanation, and instantly dropped it when they dropped MSX as well.

As for the other meanings: the Midcourse Space eXperiment actually exists, but has nothing to do with our beloved MSX computers. Multinucleate Sphere X is a virus that can kill oysters. We reported about this virus more than a year ago. More Software, less eXpensive was just a funny slogan invented by an active visitor of our website. It captures part of the MSX-feeling, but is in no way the true meaning of the abbreviation.

So, what's the true meaning of MSX? You decide. Maybe there were multiple explanations all along. We will probably never really find out. So, lets move on to the next poll and decide which is the best MSX game song ever. Happy voting!

WHAT HAVE I DONE??? This poll is too evil. I had to make a small little mega-poll thingy for myself in order to be able to decide which song to vote for. ^_^
