Infinite have announced they have cancelled their upcoming MSXdev'06 entry Title: Unknown. While the last few seconds of MSXDev'05 were enough to submit Universe: Unknown, this year's last second won't be enough. Infinite still plan to release the game, probably in the first months of 2007, of which the title remains unknown.

However, with 11 MSX1 games already released - and likely a few more to come before the deadline on December 31st - the MSXdev'06 competition can once again be called a success.

A real pity. It is/ was one of the titles I, and prolly many others, most anticipated. Fortunately Infinite plan to release it after the deadline.

that's too bad... can't they release a promo-version or something? It'd just be nice if they could still compete for... well, competition's sake Wink

No, only complete games are allowed, but who knows they'll win with this.. Wink
and that they will try real hard to still make it into this edition the contest with a minigame!

For those interested, a little back story. The game that we had to pull from the contest now was not even close what we initially had in mind. Some weeks after starting we decided that the idea was not the way to go and decided to completely change the plan. Technically we managed to get quite a bit of stuff done for this. Game wise it was a different story. By the end of September, while having gone through another concept iteration, we still didn't have a full game story and concept. Getting a good storyline usable for a game turned out not to be one of our talents. By that time we had to face the fact that this was never going to get finished and we radically changed our plan. We started on something which was at least realistic to finish. But things always turn out to be slightly more ambitious than you initially think. On top of that real life suddenly interfered with progress as well. As a result, we have quite some neat stuff laying around now, but nothing that is anywhere near the quality that we want to have for a release.

We do have the mini game though. Basically we started this yesterday. A simple idea that should be finished today. We will be expanding it till the deadline and see how far we can get in four days.

in 2007 we're likely to put a vacancy on MRC:

Wanted: storywriter (M/W), must have qualities like Michael Crighton and Tolkien, "save the princess from the evil dragon" is not an option"

It's truly this story writing aspect that's missing, or rather: the basic story, I can perfectly come up with characters and abilities, or even history.. but.. what to do with all these characters? And yet better: making a story is one thing, but making it suitable for a game is another!

Ohwell, let's Running Naked in a Field of Flowers instead..

You'd better not Running Naked in a Field of Flowers but get your ass working on the mini game! (Dammit!)

hmm, I do have secret ambitions for story writing..... (true)
but, again, I'm lazy and yes I'd rather Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

Hey, who cares about stories? Tongue

Make the game a good - playable one - and nobody will care if the story is "save the princess / save the world / whatever" Wink

And is it just me, or does the MSXDev page looks kinda bad with all those cancelled entries right on top of the status page? Wouldn't it be better if they were at the bottom - giving "priority" to the games already finished and the ones still in progress? Question

Nah, tell that to folks playing SD-Snatcher, Xak, MG1/2, IC etc.

indeed a game (depends on the game type, let's say a nice RPG/action/adventure) should have a great plot. Preferably some plot twist as the game progresses. Or where a few story lines meet (like pulp fiction for example).
It's like a good "thriller" where the plot is every thing but the thing you expected. I could name some great movies/books, but I'm sure you get the idea. There's also some good "fiction" out there. Have you ever seen "12 monkeys" with Bruce Willis. Silence of the Lambs is another great example of plots coming together with a twist. "Se7en" is also a good example of playing with existing stories (the 7 sins). Don't you just LOVE the ending of that one? Another great mindplaying movie is "fightclub", bet you didn't see that one coming.

So, stories are everything. Altho I agree on MSX playability comes first.

In the end all stories come down to same thing; saving the princess from an evil dragon.Tongue
There always is something or someone to be saved and there is always something or someone evil to be beaten!
And who does not want to save a lovely princess from an evil dragon! Wink

You could always make a game where the character is evil though. Might be somewhat of a noval idea. But then most people wouldn't relate with the main character.

exactly. Why not turn faces. Be the bad guy, or both for that matter. And let both charactres meet/cross paths towards the end of the game. THEN decide which way to choose or sumpfn. it's funny to play with characters out side the box too.

anyway, with all cancelled projects it's got me wondering; why not move the deadline a month or 3. Say march 2007 or sumpf. altho that aint' DEV'06 no more.. hmmzz...

Yes, I believe that it is being finished (if it isn't finished yet) and it is going to enter the competition:

Thread about Malaika in Karoshi Forum posted yesterday (Subject in English: Malaika is coming!).

ro: with extending the deadline I think our entry would be the only one to make that 3 months then. I estimate that the other canceled entries are either *really* canceled or they did not progress enough to be finished in 3 months.. (after all, why rush it when you can't make 31dec?).

So, yes.. I'm afraid the tR goes to either Malaika or MonstRo Hunter :-)

Well, tbh, a few extra months at least gives us the option to really polish the game and add quite some cool thingies. Most time was spent on a splendid editor in which we can see/edit/tweak about the whole game.. so no time wasted on 'edit', 'save/export', build .ROM, 'load savegame', 'activate Don'tDie cheat', 'test' etc.
