And there it is! For some years already, the MSXDev contest has gained quite some popularity among MSX users. Some may even say that MSXDev gained cult status. Especially the 2005 and 2006 editions brought us many new free MSX1 games, sometimes coming from experienced teams or individuals for whom it was their first MSX1 output. Needless to say, a new edition in 2007 would only have been a formality. Regulars might have spotted a discussion here and there in the past half year, concerning the specifications described in the contest rules. It was a discussion which was initiated after some promising games had been canceled and whether the higher ROM size had a role in that. It was up to the MSXDev organizers to discuss this question internally, and so they did. Here's a summary of the rules for MSXDev'07:

  • as with previous editions, a ROM is still the format to submit the finished game on
  • as with previous editions, the MSX1 is still the target computer
  • a game may use a maximum of 64kB RAM (non memory-mapped) and 16kB VRAM
  • maximum size of the game is a MegaROM (128kB)
  • the game should work with the minimum system specifications, for details about these minimum specifications consult the MSXDev'07 website
  • a game may support additional hardware, such as MSX2, Graphics9000, FM-PAC, SCC, Moonsound, etc. Additions such as these will be taken into account by the jury, as long as the game also works with the minimum specifications
  • the game has to run on all MSX models compatible with the given contest specifications, penalty points will be given when this is not the case
  • the game has to have original material, or otherwise material with permission from the original author(s)
  • an entry must come with a manual in English and a cartridge label, and if you've followed the news recently then you know why this label could be so important! This year, the quality of this manual and label won't be taken into account when judging the games

As one can see, the maximum amount of allowed RAM has been raised compared to previous editions, this could give certain developers a bit of breathing space while other developers could see yet another challenge to make the ultimate game we've never seen before. Do note that 64kB is a maximum, not a minimum, you may still make a game that uses only 16kB RAM, nor does your game have to be a full MegaROM. Previous editions have shown that most of the entries haven't used the maximum specifications at all.

The prize for the best game, according to the jury, has yet to be decided. We'll update you whenever there's any news regarding this. Identical to previous editions is the open sponsorship construction. If you would like to donate a generic prize, or a prize for a special category, make sure you contact the organizers!

The jury has yet to be announced, according to the MSXDev website this will be at the end of this month: April the 30th. The most important date however will be December the 30th of 2007, the -very strict- deadline for the entries, put that one into your agenda!

The MSX Resource Center wishes this year's contestants good luck and the upcoming jury all the wisdom they can get, for this year's MSXDev edition might give us far more spectacular MSX1 games than ever before!

Ah, those 64KB RAM will make life a bit easier. Smile

However, I wonder when we will receive the TurboR we won with MSXdev’05...

It would be very interesting to see a game, that runs on a MSX1, but also supports an MSX2 screen mode! Something like platform independancy Wink

May I suggest that lazy git "ro" as jury? He can code, draw and compose, so he has all the capabilities to judge a game. And he's lazy enough not to join himself. ^^

Please, fix the prize, as there is no TurboR this time (at least, it hasn't been decided yet).

If you check the whole new in the site (Although the main prize and the jury has been not announced yet, stay tuned, as news will start to flow from this renewed MSXDEV Team website!), and the status section (PRICES - MSXdev'07 General Contest - To be announced soon!), you'll notice there is still no prize and no jury yet. You probably have been confused by the example given in the rules section in order people to understand the sponsor system (It might sound a bit confusing, so a sponsor file example would help).

At the MSXDEV Team we are still wandering about the final prize, as TurboRs do not grow in trees :P... Can you please fix this asap?, some contestants are getting confused with this... thanks!

Anyway, it is fun to reopen the contest again!. Join MSXdev'07 now! :D

Sure I'm lazy enough to not enter the comp. Altho I sent the dev folks an email about being a jury on dev04/05 already.... But hell, I'd be honered to be a jury.

If you stick to MSX1 specifications, don't give away the most advanced MSX turboR as first prize. Stick to your principles and award the winner with a fancy MSX1 Tongue

ro, the titlething is a bug, we don't know how or why. Ivan thinks he did something, and later on he wasn't sure about it. I think it'll take a real admin a.k.a. snout or so to fix it tho (we humble webmasters can't)

Small detail on the rules:
VDP: TMS9918/TMS9928 or compatible video processor
PSG: AY-3-8912 or compatible sound chip

You might want to change that to: "VDP: TMS9918A/TMS9928A and compatibles" and "PSG: AY-3-8912 and compatibles", since the "or" implies that it's ok if it runs on any compatible device, eg. runs on a V9938 but not on a TMS9918A. Oh, and according to Wikipedia, the not-A versions don't support screen 2 Tongue

The following list are the only allowed mappers: konami without SCC, konami with SCC, ASCII 8KB and ASCII 16KB. Those are the most common MegaROM mappers, but still we think it is interesting to define the allowed mappers in order not to get games that could have severe uncompatibilities with existing hardware such as flash ROMs.
Are such flash ROMs able to run the ASCII+SRAM mappers? that would be handy for bigger games saving user data (instead of tape).

My MegaFlash SRAM can handle them I think... but of course, there are some different SRAM sizes too, depending on the games (2KB-8KB).

It is good to see the MRC supporting the contest with the appaerance of an MSXdev'07 upper banner again. If it is not much trouble, I suggest you to use this one instead. Let's hope this new edition will bring us lots of games!

Great that the dev continues.......
Winning the competition alone is already enough. The prizes are just a nice addition (IMHO).
IF I will be releasing something it will be for MSXdev'07. But for that one needs spare time Crying
