All Metal Gear fans around the world hold their breath waiting for upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the patriots (planned release date is 12/06/2008), a new installment in the highly popular Metal Gear series, which originally took off on the MSX in 1987.

While waiting for the release, GameTrailers decided to heat up the interest by publishing the Metal Gear Restrospective trailer, made out of 2 parts. Part One covers the 8-bit era, and 2nd one (to be published soon) will talk about MGS on PlayStation and later installments of the game.

To many, it may come as a surprise that Hideo Kojima has had a troubled period in his developing career, but that's exactly what happened. The original Metal Gear was a last attempt to save Kojima's career. The idea of a "sneaking mission" game, where the player isn't encouraged to kill everything on sight was a daring move ... and the rest of this concept became MSX-history!

The trailer contains:

  • story about Kojima's involvment in Penguin Adventure creation
  • side-by-side comparison of MSX2 and NES versions of Metal Gear
  • Snake's Revenge coverage
  • Metal Gear 2 - Solid Snake coverage

How very cool! Too bad they mostly use the remake graphics (look at the text fonts). Maybe they don't know about the fan translation by Maarten/Takamichi? Or maybe they only wanted to use official translations. Luckily they do show the original MG2 character images in the radio screen. The MSX2 ones are so much better Smile

I've watched the trailer and the music at 14:41 doesn't sound familiar to me... is it present in Metal Gear 2 - Solid Snake? I don't remember Snake sneaking as in 14:45 Question

Note that the video mentions both Antarctic Adventure and Penguin Adventure, but Kojima only worked on the latter, it seems. So, the MRC post is not entirely accurate here.

The floor camouflage at 14:45 does seem familiar to me… I think it was an item that you could put down and crawl under.

jup, that's just your camouflage thingy, just like the cardboard is. Tho you don't really need it to complete the game. It hides you from plain sight, but when guards walk/step onnit, alarm is raised Sad
Funny stuff, nothing more than funny stuff.

Good video btw. Indeed too bad they didn't use REAL MSX footage.

To many, it may come as a surprise that Hideo Kojima has had a troubled period in his developing career, but that's exactly what happened. It so happens that I just read an interview/profile on Hideo last week which mentioned that. Funny how thing can turn out... gheh.

Well, at least they are talking about faces from original MG2:SS and compare original ones with those from the modern port.
