Falcom have released the YS Origin, a new game in the YS saga, of which the first three parts were released on MSX as well. We had already reported on a nice trailer of the game, which you can find over here.
Snout, I do appreciate your effort with MSX.org portal and community. You are doing fabulous job in finding out every little detail that's related, even remotely, to MSX. I am a frequent visitor.
I have no problems with ads whatsoever. Everyone does it, and it works out great. But if someone tries to promote a product for modern console and links to affiliate site rather then game vendor, it's fair to expect this to be done openly. Something like this: "This game is available for import at great price from our affiliate PlayAsia[linked]". And keep the relevant link relevant, i.e. point to game page on vendor's site.
I did buy stuff from PlayAsia, and I like the store. I do click on your banners, so your affiliates see that you do generate new visitors for them. I think it's good enough. If you don't think so, go ahead, delete my user id.
Btw, the msx.org frontpate has a 1:5 ratio of text to markup (page size)… A normal ratio is somewhere between 1:2 or 1:3 if you use a CSS-based layout. So I think if hosting costs are too high, reducing the bandwidth by half would help. I offered to improve the CSS of msx.org once, but you didn’t take it up. Still having an unfinished experiment laying about here, it has a 1:1,5 page size ratio, maybe you’ll find it worthwhile to look into that after all.
Oh but we can take criticism, Grauw... just not bullcrap like "Wonderful. Posing affiliate advertisement as MSX-related news." or "If you don't think so, go ahead, delete my user id". C'est le ton qui fait la musique and "le ton" could very often be a bit more clear and constructive on MRC. If dhau had made clear from the start that not as such the affiliate ads, but the way we linked to them (and have often done before) was a problem to him I would have responded differently.
Ok, so I did not have a too merry Christmas this year and took it out on you, and for what it's worth: my cynicism was more targeted at dhau as it was to you, Grauw. But honestly... do you really think making such a big fuzz over one (1) newspost out of three-thousand-eight-hundred-and-twenty-five (3825) is really necessary?
As for the CSS: It's not as much the datatraffic, as it is the performance/stability/availability/security/backup of the webserver. The design will get more (and perhaps even 100%) CSS based in the future, but that's something for 'dynamic' MRC v3.
1. I don’t really see a big fuss, it’s only dhau making a remark and me saying he’s got a point, 2. I think the first comment dhau made was actually quite funny, given that as said 3. dhau does have a good point and next time it would be good if MRC clearly indicated links to an affiliate (something like ‘you can buy the game at Play Asia through our affiliate program’ or whatever would be much better), the main link at the bottom of the post linking to the company’s game info site or a review or whatever… It would be a problem if that 1 news post out of a 3825 grew into more. I can imagine one’s surprise ending up at a webshop instead of a page giving information about the game.
Oh, and finally 4. it would be better if MRC did not go into ‘defensive mode’ everytime someone makes a critical comment (even if with an ironic, cynic or sarcastic tone), that’s not being productive with your or our energy , plus that those comments usually point out something that can use improvement and is thus valueable feedback even if its form might not be. You might even concede the point occasionally .
If not, you get into a spiral as seen here where dhau’s slightly cynical remark triggers your kind of derogatory response, which in turn makes dhau add a not-so-nice final phrase to an otherwise great response making clear what he means exactly, which in turn makes you respond sarcastically again instead of responding er, ‘inhoudelijk’ and annoy me as well (thinking ‘this is uncalled for’) just because I happen to agree. In the end everybody feels upset. If you feel ‘le ton’ is not good, then at least don’t make the same mistake yourself…
Well, anyway, take it or leave it, of course.
And fwiw, my christmas was also hardly spectacular, with its climax being a fries-with-hamburger dinner at ‘Wendy’s Hamburgers’ with 4 people . It doesn’t get much worse than that except that after that we went to drink a big bottle of beer at the worst hellhole ‘rocking cafe’ you can think of, all depressedly sighing how terrible this christmas is. The bartender even offered us a game of Jenga, sensing our mood, which was kind of nice, but then again he kept calling us ‘handsome boys’ which was kinda freaky. And of course you can’t really leave until you finished your beer. It’s all because I’m in Japan, they don’t really ‘do’ christmas here. Tho I s’pose whether that’s really something to be sad about is up for debate ;p.
Grauw, your comment above made me laugh like a maniac! "Handsome Boys" is a great name for a j-pop group with several male performers! I recommend performance outfits in line with HG-style! First single title could be "Lets Love Forever!" :)
