Today Ramones has published a new promo video on YouTube about The Goonies 'R' Good Enough, the upcoming platform/action game for MSX by Kralizec. Some time ago they already published some footage on YouTube showing the MSX2/2+/tR version of the game in action. This time the video is about its MSX1 counterpart, specifically about the second stage of the game. As we informed earlier the game will be available in a few months on a 4MBit MegaROM cartridge and will feature two versions, one for MSX1 and the other one for MSX2/2+/tR. It will also include an SCC chip to enhance the music, digitized images in SCREEN 12, adjustable PSG-SCC balance, an in-game map, a password mode to continue your game later and much, much more.

The Goonies 'R' Good Enough is a fan production based on the adventure-comedy film from 1985 The Goonies. Konami released one year later the video game for MSX and NES/Famicom of the hit motion picture. It is a movie that still has loyal fans and dedicated websites like TheGoonies.org or remakes for different platforms like the one of Brain Games.

Would it be possible to use 105 colours (MSX1 version) in the digitized images like dvik and Vincent van Dam did in MSX Unleashed?

Would be also nice, if Goonies and bandits could have MOVIE LOOK-A-LIKE heads. Smile Now they all look trendy 2009AD japanese kids, not 1985 Goonies at all. Remember, Goonies were american kids almost twenty-five years ago, not modern day japanese. Wink It will be not a big job to draw new head sprites which look like original Goonies. Then you can add option to title screen:

[INS]: Password
[F1]: 1985 Goonies

That way you could have TWO different versions for both MSX and MSX2, "japanese trendy goonies" and "Movie Goonies", by just defining another sprites for heads !!!! Smile

That would be GREAT! Big smile

I find the 'INS for password' thing a bit awkward. It's like, no-one has used that key before in a game, so let's do it! Now I'm not sure how that title screen responds to joystick input, but I can imagine that you can't use a MSX without keyboard with this game. Which is a bad thing, as I've got a tail-less NMS8280 underneath my TV setup for the occasional shoot'em-up...

So: what's with the INS key?

Glad to see the MSX1 version. Looking good.

I have only one suggestion: Try to make the back grounds a bit darker. Dithering (like already in the shadows) would be a good option. This way you get more dept. And the sprites are better visible.
If you want you could send me a screenshot. Then I can show you what I mean.

Anyway. Good work. I see a lot of attention to details.

The problem I can see with this is that, if sprites had the movie look-a-like aspect, then the whole graphic set should have a movie look-a-like aspect. I think the graphics aspect is a design decision, and, even though one can dislike them, they are coherent as a whole. Take into account that, although the game is based on an american movie, it is a MSX game, and MSX games mostly have a japanese feeling. Thus, I think the graphics style is approppriate.

Errr... what? I mean... what? LOL!

All the MSX have the INS key, so... why don't use it? Almost all the MSX games require keyboard because... MSX is a computer and has keyboard. You need keyboard to pause Nemesis. You need keyboard to introduce passwords on Maze of Galious.

From a programming point of view, I think that the INS key is one of the few MSX keys that can be easily read without depending on the specific keyboard layout.

I can imagine that the problem of visibility is mostly due to Youtube. I mean, sprites seem to disappear sometimes on the video, but I imagine that they simply flicker on the MSX. Thus, probably the sprites are much more "visible" on the real MSX thing than on the Youtube video.

Sadly, people is never happy enough with the results...I'm very happy with the results, the game looks outstanding!!! In my case it is a mere suggestion to improve the quality of the digitized images.

You could've used GRPH, CTRL [Usas], SHIFT, make a selection menu out of it... But why INS? It's unconventional.

And yes, I do realize that I made a fool out of myself by ignoring the fact that once there's no keyboard, there's no passwords that can be bashed in. Ha well, let's not make too big of a deal out of it. I'll not use passwords then Wink

MäSäXi: I like the current design of the characters' heads!

[D-Tail]: What's wrong with the INS key? MSX are computers, not consoles (and few people own a Zemmix).

Huey: That's the background of the second stage (other stages may look different) and the charactares are perfectly visible. And according to Ramones the framerate of the video in YouTube is way lower than the one in a real MSX.

Yep, it´s a matter of taste does one like japanese hentai/anime/whatever or not. Smile And yes, I thought about that MSX has many japanese games, before writing about head sprites.

Adding new head sprites was just a suggestion. As this game is based to old loved game, many people surely may have some expectations towards new game. But I still think, that if you add new head sprites, new heads won´t spoil existing background graphics and vice versa. And I didn´t mean that you should delete existing heads, no! I just meaned, that there could be TWO sets of heads, one set for this "japanese version" and one set for "1985 movie look-a-like goonies". As there are digitised screenshots from that old movie already, it´s another reason it would be nice to have "1985 heads". Wink

And it is life, no matter what one may do, one cannot make everyone happy. If someone got my suggestion as "harsh critic", you should imagine what game reviewers of the eighties around the world could have been thinking about brand new Goonies game which is based to brand new Goonies movie, that everything looks good, but why oh why goonies and baddies look like they are taken from some other movie? But you at Kralizec can of course decide the way you want your game look like! Smile

But anyway, graphically game looks very good and music is well composed! Smile I wish that eighties MSX games could have had same graphical and musical standard as this.... Smile

About ´INS´ key, I thought it must be because INS is shortening of INSERT.

As if you wanna get straight to next stage without playing first stage again, you´ll have to INSERT password. Wink

Amazing...
My only comment should be that the character seems too "transparent"...
Maybe something more like Treasure of Usas or even The Cure...
