Ademir Carchano has produced 18 brand new Mini Slot Expanders for MSX, allowing you to expand one single MSX cartridge slot to 4, which can come in quite handy. This particular slotexpander is very compact, but not suitable for every MSX cartridge slot as it needs horizontal placement (and possibly a little extra support to rest on). Slot Expanders are available for R$ 180,- ex. shipping (~ € 60,-) in Brazil.

I'm ordering 1 from the Netherlands. If someone from Holland is interested, please let me know.
Maybe we can share the shipping cost.

Hmm, I tried contacting Ademir through the web form on his site, but I don't think it's working. Does he happen to have a direct email? I am in the market for a good slot expander and if he sets the price at R$ 105, I may be able to swing that.

Would there be any dangers of this type of slot expander overheating my Turbo GT though? Do others have external PSU?

You can use an external PSU, it supports.

Maybe that's a typo, because people that got the expanders from this run (myself included) paid R$ 150,00 plus shipping...

Carchano said (at MSXBR-L mailing list) that he bought some edge connectors for a special price so he was going to lower the prices on this run... But never as low as R$ 105,00...

Still a very good price for a very good product! I altered the price in the news post.

Years ago I bought one of these slotexpanders on an MSX fair in the Netherlands. It's a great device indeed.

@SkyeWelse I never had any problems with my turboR, no overheating, no unexpected behavior, no need for an external PSU. There might be hardware that requires an external PSU (or placement in SLOT 1), but I did not encounter it in my somewhat regular use.

Thanks for the update Snout, I would still be interested in ordering this at some point, although the price seems to be steadily increasing rather quickly from the original R$105 posting. : 0 Depending on the shipping costs from Brasil to America, I may have to hold off until he makes his next batch of slot expanders. I still haven't heard back from Ademir when I last emailed him about the price for shipping and order availability a few days ago.

Regarding the overheating concerns, I'm happy to learn that there have been no issues reported, though what does still concern me is that since I live in America, I use a step-down converter to make 120 volts become around 100 volts when output to the Turbo R GT. I wonder if this is enough voltage to power the MSX fully without taxing it too much with another interface. Gradius 2 did mention that an external PSU can be used, is that something that a power cable can be easily connected to the slot expander or would this take extra modification. My personal preference would be to use the external PSU since my plug (step down converter) is sitting right next to the MSX. : )

SkyeWelse,

Shipping costs from Brazil to USA may be cheaper than shipping to Europe... But I can't tell for sure because I never sent anything internationally.

About the converter, half brazilian homes have 127V on their outlets, and the other half have 220V, so we can tell... The only thing you need to concern about is how much power (or how much current) is your converter rated to. An underrated converter (an converter rated for 20W powering an 27W device) will become hotter than it meant to be and melt something inside it, with dangerous issues... (you can set fire at your home in worst cases!) And your MSX can likely suffer of under current, we all know about dead pc motherboards and graphics cards because of low wattage/cheap pc psu... In other hand, if your converter is over-rated (way over rated, like a 200W converter for the same 27W device) the only danger in it is spending more money than you meant to. (because of the price of the converter and a little increase on your electricity bill)

I still think the slot expander external psu header is more a "just in case" than a need. But if you really think you need it, just solder a wire for +5V and another for GND, hook them to your external +5V psu and you're done.
