Yep, that way it is correctly explained. But while i understand internal/extarnal is about readback - that's quite a habit to use words "internal"/"external" to indicate it (hehe, habits are both best and worst human's friends btw)
my mmm of version 1.5 has this jumper. there is a label "int" close to it.

The game I'm trying to run is: F-1 Spirit 3D Special
I'm running this game on a: MSX 2+ FS-A1WSX
My floppy drive stopped working so I got an external floppy drive to accommodate this.
What I believe is happening is: the external floppy drive is using RAM that the game needs to run and therefore cannot boot up.
But what do you mean by "internal mapper" vs. "external mapper"? There’s no difference... And the machines which block external mapper readback (Panasonic FS-A1WSX, etc.) will have issues with nonstandard software which does mapper readback unavoidably.
It's just to explain that by activating the reading we will have the same thing as an internal Memory Mapper on an MSX without Mapper. Reading the Mapper registers became obsolete quickly, but the internal mappers still kept the reading on all MSX. This is the story of the standard even if you are right to no longer differentiate mappers now.
I'm trying to decipher the information on the wiki, but it's like another language -- I don't understand a word of it! I have no technical knowledge about this sort of stuff, so it's all gibberish to me. And I can't quite understand what you guys are saying in this topic, either, as it's all rather technical.
I guess what I want to know is, if I were to change out that jumper, would it be possible to run more 128kb+ software on my Panasonic FS-A1WX than I can with the MMM as-is? And would there be any downside to attempting it -- like, is there a risk that altering that jumper will make the cartridge LESS compatible with the 128kb+ games it CAN currently run? Or is there a risk of damaging the cart, or my system?
I literally have NO EXPERIENCE with ANYTHING beyond simple BASIC commands, so the more matter-of-factly you can explain this to me, the better.

radicalfaith360, which external floppy drive are you using?
@wyrdwad Tom, no risk of damaging the cart, so you can just try. The case is with screws so it opens very easily. It might impove compatibility but might deprive it as well. You have to try, i guess

Problem is there is no source for this story. But we already discussed this.

This jumper will have no effect on a WSX so no need to try it.
Also, F1 Spirit 3D Special is a Japanese title so I'd be very surprised if this needs more than 64K to run (no MSX2+ with more than 64K exists). There must be some other issue.
Edit: According to generation-msx indeed it only needs 64K.

No.

I don't see a way where it would decrease compatibility.
Thanks for the answers. I guess I'll give it a shot sometime if I'm feeling adventurous, but I'll keep my expectations very low.
What I'm curious about, though, is why the MMM works on any 128kb games at all, if Panasonic MSX2+ systems don't allow for this sort of memory assignment? Because there are quite a few games I can play with the MMM that I couldn't without it, like Pumpkin Adventure 3, Bombaman, Akin, and (if and ONLY if the MMM is in the second cartridge slot, NOT the first, for some reason) Lilo. But then there are a bunch I CAN'T play with it, including The Witch's House, the recently released Morning Star, and (I've been told) Pumpkin Adventure 2.

@radicalfaith360
Does it work if I press Ctrl key at startup?
Normally, pressing the Ctrl key disables the virtual drive function and saves memory.
