Yes John, it does work the other way round as well. When the musicdisc Twisted Reality got sold I was asked if I listened to metal a lot. without noticing myself I used a lot of metal influence in the (house) music. Especially Slayer some guy thought. AND HE WAS FU***NG RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!
Hehehe, that's cool! When merging this kind of styles, original stuff comes up, which is a good thing.
Xak ttog, intro.. that one has a nice bassline, as well as SD-Snatcher
One could bring any orchestral piece of music down to a 3-polyphone structure. Melody, harmony and baseline, that's what matters. If something sounds big or not, is merely a secondary matter.
Someone could make a 32 channel song which has nothing in it, and vice versa.
I know what you want to say, but it's chiptune territory we're talking now. 32 channels doesn't automatically mean there's 32 instruments! Some RoA pieces I do use full 24 channels, but musically thay are like 5 instruments orso. It's just that I give them some room, for release-tails, acoustics (reverb and echo) etc. And I need some alternating to avoid those dreaded ticks between samples.
To me, the concept of 'creation' comes first. Later on, 'creation' can be split-up into composition and sound-size. For me, size does matter, perhaps not for a puzzlegame, but for an RPG of epic proportions you really don't want chiptunes
The YS2 chiptunes were indeed quite horrid
</sarcasm>
Let's keep things in perspective We're @ 2004, almost 2005 now .., not in the Ys-age .. (yeah.. sounds more funny in Dutch than in JP
)
That's Japanese? Wow, I'm amazed I can read it
'YS' is JP, ... rite?
oh.. no.. not this 'what is your music creating influence topic' again :S
like I said earlier.. and earlier.. IT IS MY MOOD..
Not MSX, Not Atarui not even the Boom chicky boom I hear in the Bar.. It's my freaking mood.. And I'm pissed off atm cauz I'm stuck with a deadline that I'm not going to make... So.. Tomorrow I'm gonna make me a pissant song...
More Baco's and cheerz
And I need some alternating to avoid those dreaded ticks between samples.Oh yes, I remember those ticks, annoying like hell indeed!

Although I think, speaking of Ys, that there's been done a good job, using the limitations of the PSG.
Like merging the baseline and snaredrum in the same channel. This pattern must look familiar:
B_BBS_BBB_BBS_BBB_BBS and so on
Well, I know what you mean, but with "influence" I was referring mostly to musical instead of technical aspect.
BTW, I wonder what tunes you made for RoA. Long time since I heard some music by your hand.
Fragment-based compositions, much wood/brass, harpsichord, dark spooky sounds, strings, intimate rhodes, big acoustics etc. Big music and small music, dark and bright, all tailormade for the location they're used for.. For the moment it's a mix of Vangelis' Voices and 1492, the PC-game Diablo2, and a couple o' movies.
With fragment-based I mean that there's a lot of elements in 1 tune, so it's not 16 patterns here for an 'A' part, 16 patterns there for a 'B' part, and then some repetitions of A and B etc. In some tunes each pattern is new, while there *is* a memorable theme that's easy to pick-up.
Anyway, you'll hear it when the game's out (or perhaps earlier!)
I express my self in music
