@sd_snatcher, do the MODE button has any other function than forcing the 3-button mode (4 actually)?
There is a MEGA-CD game "Game no Kandume" ("Game can collection". The discs come in a case which is made of tin metal lol) where the famous voice actress Megumi Hayashibara says some stuff every time you push a button (title says "Push start") so if you push the MODE button the game plays the voice "Mode botan janai no" ("Not the MODE button"). lol
Of course that means the MODE button is readable by the software.
Really? Thanks on the info, l_oliveira!
Fom what I can tell the mode button behaves like a normal button. It gets detected by joymega.com as an actual button like updownleftrightabcxyz and start.
A handfull of sega megadrive games use it as well for various ingame functions.
My guess its just a normal button with some added logic/tech/whatever (I dont know the official terminology) connected to it to have it the extra functionality of putting the pad in 3 button mode if held at boot.
Question (for future reference): of all the people who created a joymega adapter or modded a joypad, who all have the MODE button?

My 6 button pad is a original Japanese pad (blue start button, short cable) and MODE button is there. I don't think there's any original 6 button pad without a MODE button in it.
Thats correct, the mode button is there by default. And from what I can tell, 3rd party controllers also have the mode button.
On the other hand, those from dx.com seem to have no mode button unless you do a mod (like sd_snatcher described). And I had the feeling most people doing the mods would be using that particular model.
Although obviously not really important I just thought it was nice to know. I came up with some stupid game idea that would need all 8 buttons :P But the mode could be optional I suppose ;)Now once I figure out how to to write the control code I can start making it :) (atm studying the source of joymega.com but I dont want to blatenly copy-paste without knowing how stuff works)
Offtopic: Have you noticed how Deal Extreme logo is a rip off from Yamaha's DX keyboard series signature logo ? haha
I never noticed so I took a look: while I do see some resemblence I'd say its just close or similar design with enough differences between them

They just took the logo and put thicker blank stripes on the X (it had smaller blank stripes on the original design).
oh indeed thats the same logo.. I just did a quick google and i found another version with a Rounder D and without the stripes and that was what I was commenting on
The logo in the picture is the earliest one. There's another where the whole "DX7" symbol is drawn like the 7 of the picture.
So much fun at derailing a thread .... I'm sorry lol
