#msxdev Compo 2014: Pointless Fighting announced

In 2011, norakomi started working on a MSX2 version of Street Fighter 2. He successfully created a promising prototype in 2 months time. However for various reasons he never finished it and it was never shown to the public until last year's Barcelona RU. Footage and pictures found their way to the web and sparked the interest of many fans who tried convincing norakomi to resume the project. Some time later the decision was made that the game would be finished by another team.

Now, with less than 6 months until the deadline, Baka-Yo! Softcorp has decided to make it official, announcing "Pointless Fighting" as the very first entry of #msxdev Compo 2014! They certainly have their work cut out for them. The game will no doubt be highly anticipated and looks set to raise the bar on MSX2 development.

The current requirements for running this game are a MSX2 with 128kB RAM and a 4MB FlashROM, but in order to make the game accessible to more MSX users, these may be changed to 256kB RAM and MSX-DOS2. It will support keyboard and joysticks, including Joymega-adapter with Sega 6-button devices. MSX-MUSIC and MoonSound are also supported.

This is great news, but how does raising the requirements make it more accessible?

Well, more people have 256kb ram and dos2 than a 4mb flashrom....

Great game!

John it is like this:

Option A: 128KB ram + a flashrom that containts 4MB or more.

OR

Option B: 256KB ram + DOS2 + sd/cf/ide etc

Option A means you HAVE to have a MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD (or the one with mapper) since that is the only device that has a big enough flashrom to fit that, while looking at option B, I would think almost everyone has that amount of RAM and some big storage.

But not everyone has a MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD. From what I can tell there are people who only have a older flashrom with 512KB. And some people, like me, who don't even have a flashrom (I have playsoniq though)

If you look at it the other way around, everyone who has a MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD + Mapper can play option B, as well as option A.

And I think most people with a MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD (without mapper) will have 256KB or more, otherwise they would have bought/upgraded it with the mapper.

So in my humble opinion, more people would be able to play the game if the developers went for option B.

Anyway like I said in my newspost, option B is a POSSIBLE plan for the future, so for now it is only option a, the 4MB ROM version.

This is the MSX2 version of streetfighter Smile

Good job guys. Trowing it into a compo garantuees it to get it finished Smile very good Smile

Any plans to go to the extreme and add optional side scrolling or do you stick to the same plan as norakomi at the time?

Awesome, I hope that this one will get finished... If I can help by writing scripts to exract data from the SNES game (or whatever version), let me know. (But you sort out where the stuff is locatedTongue)

Ok, but it was necessary to add additional 4Mb on a single cartridge?
Maximum 4Mb for 1 cartridge. For other data, add more cartridges. Is it worth it to mount an expansion slot x 4.
This amounts to 16Mb.

Bravo, the programmer! Big smile

Greetings.

Simply brilliant. 4Mb Flashrom is not really a problem, since megaflashrom scc+ is a very usual hardware piece for MSX users.

Good luck!! Big smile Big smile

I am sure that the story of all the characters are not pointless, I should change the name to other more apropiate, like "Fighting Strong" or something like "Legend of the golden fist".

hah legend of the golden fist sound like some cheap 90's martial arts flick Big smile
which is actually pretty in-line with a remake of sf2 since its from the same era Wink

If you are using (parts) of the SF2 story for chars, note that the japanese version has extra stuff in their profiles like, likes and dislikes and what not.

I liked Pointless Fighting. It has the right amount of humour since in the fighting games (and movies as well) you normally don't have an elaborated back story, so everything seems kind of pointless. Smile

Actually in Street Fighter 2 every character have a back story. I am not sure about SNES version, but in Amiga version was different ending for each fighter.

In the Street Fighter franchise, all characters have backstories, some more interesting than others.

Personally I don't pay attention much to storylines when playing SF, I am usually more interested in practicing moves execution and combos and stuff Big smile

I don't think there is a "correct" title since it is a fan remake and not an official port. What I mean is, in this case any title can be the correct one.

I'm very exiting to see this game, and playing it...
But, I 'm suprised to see it as first entry at MSX Dev compo...
because of this rule :
"Ripped graphics or music are discouraged and will be penalised as the judges see fit. " ? Question

Who said the graphics/music will be ripped?

Also, perhaps the rule meant 'ripped from other MSX software'?

Discouraged as in: "rather not, we prefer not, but if you really must then do it!"

In other words, if someone submits an entry with ripped gfx, it is allowed, but has to keep in mind that his overall score/ranking may be a bit lower due to (lack of) originality (hence the "penalty").

Well, I liked the title screen. Besides, I believe the developer should have the right to decide what he thinks is best for everything related to the game he created. Maybe it is just me, but I loved the title (Pointless Fighting). Smile

Hi, I have something about the speed of the Z80 when writing on vram (Pointless Fighting):
But it was impossible to perform the copy using COPY (x, y) - (x2, y2), pag to (I, J), destpag, arg?
Is the speed of 0x98 higher than that of the MSX-VIDEO?

I have read all the posts in this game forum "Pointless Fighting"....
in code Z80, was it fast with "OTIR" or OUTI ?

To go faster in the shortest cycle time, how do you solve the problem? Question
All we have to do is wish for the work of his program. But in my opinion the game runs well, but I am not convinced that the speed 0x98 was faster than the HMMM (LOW or HIGH ?)
Good luck! Big smile

By Grauw

It depends on whether sprites are enabled. Max throughput of OUTI per 60 Hz frame is 59736 / 18 = 3319 bytes. Throughput of HMMM is 2784 bytes/frame when sprites are enabled, and 3616 bytes/frame when sprites are disabled (source).

The fastest is to do both OUTI to 98h on the CPU and use the HMMM VDP command in parallel. Although writing to VRAM with OUTIs slows down the command execution, the total amount of bytes transferred is still higher. I think I read this is what Pointless Fighting does.

It is correct to think as you say but it would be more correct to think of redoing all the graphics/musics/i.a. inside the game and devising a Pointless Fighting for MSX2 that has nothing to do with Street Fighter II of Capcom.
