Hi all,

I've been wondering where to get good, decent quality new joysticks for MSXes. Joysticks are consumables and will wear away eventually. I guess this thread could be a good place to gather together the alternatives you have found!

Some alternatives I've found already:

*) The ML-50JY are nice for some games. But having a potentiometer-based switches, they lack any kind of tactile feedback for when the switch is actually shorted.
**) These are easy to wire up to use on an MSX (but should not be used as-is!). They are very flimsy and small, however (I already broke the D-PAD of one after very light usage!). But they are cheap!

Requirements of a decent joystick (IMO):

  • Both buttons working, or re-wireable (without replacing the DB9 -connector!)
  • Decent price (this can be debateable; but < 20€, or at most <40€/joystick - depending on quality!)
  • I prefer tactile feedback (but this can be a matter of taste)
  • Good quality overall

With off-the-shelf DB9 -connectors, there is the problem of the flaps at the sides which will interfere with most (MSX) computer cases (of the era). There are extension leads that can alleviate the problem, however - but often they will make the setup unnecessarily clunky.

Ive seen somewhere new Competition Pro joysticks for a decent price, but none I've found are functional as such on MSX (with both buttons!); also they (forgot where) didin't state which leads in the cord are actually present; if they are not all there (but only the 6 required for directions + one button) it may be impossible to modify them to work on an MSX in a clean way (because, AFAIK, no "slim" DB9 connectors are available off-the-shelf). EDIT: I found a competition PRO joystick which has clear documentation - added above!

Long ago, I bought the same joypad. The suction cups have not adhered long. It is difficult to handle the button 2 without suction cups.

I haven't had any problems with sensitivity, but they are overall very cheaply made so there can certainly be variation among individual pads.

As for tight connectors, I had no problems with the pads I got, but the extension cords I bought from eBay have a very tight female end for nearly all joysticks/pads I have! So I guess there's some disagreement on the size of the connector on some manufacturers. The newer metal ones (used in PCs etc since 90s) have less variation in size, but do not work with these old computers for the reason I stated previously.

I bought two of the competition Pros I linked previously... I will share my experiences here once I get them (build quality etc.).

I was just browsing the net and found something that might interest people reading this thread: DB9 connector adapter for newer connectors.. Essentially, it's an alternative for an extension cord, if one does not really need the extension (just something to connect a modern connector properly with).

Nope, they are really not the same... I've bought both... The DX joypads are really quite ok especially when you look at the price, but the description that you gave very well fits for the ones I've bought from eBay... The ones on eBay were cheaper, but were quite horrible with cable lenght of 70cm. DX models fit better to hand & computer, have better touch and cable length of 150cm.

Get a Quickshot Maverick from Ebay, they are a 2 button dual lead joystick (to easily switch between port 1 & 2) with autofire that is mode switchable between Atari/Commodore - MSX - Amstrad - SEGA.

Do you know these "new" MSX joypads? They look good.

If you prefer a stick, this one might be worth a look: http://arcadeforge.net/Joysticks/Custom-Atari-Amiga-Commodor...

These seems to be some high quality replicas of the Megadrive 6-button controller.

Thanks for the link Snatcher. It seems that they have no "Mode" button (not really an issue... I just have my "Maze of Galious" configuration using all 6 buttons + start & mode).
Ordered 2 units to check that. The other cheap-chinese models I had were quite crappy (I just used the eletronics inside as interface to other joypad/sticks).
