I quite disagree with you.

You (and certainly others) may wish or want or hope that word to be understood like that, but the reality is another thing. Ask anyone what they think hacking is, and they'll tell you that it involves cracking and generally doing illegal stuff. And in the end, the people will remember their definition and their understanding, not the one you wish they would use.

Just my 2 cents.

I understood. The problem occurs when a script blocker is used.

Hacking (something) describes a certain activity, like e.g. cutting something. Just like any activity, we can put it in a 'good' or 'bad' box (and/or perhaps 'neutral').

So an 'educated' person will know that hacking can involve either 'good' or 'bad'.. But yes, I guess a lot of people have a negative connotation with the word simply because they're unaware of the fact that hacking can be 'good' also. When you hear about 'hacking' in the 'news' it tend to be negative news. Although recently I've seen some reporting on white hat hacking, so I guess it's just a matter of education/time before the prevalent (negative) connotation will fade.

+ (while I'm at it) tip for nitrofurano regarding the game enhancement survey thread (NOFI): instead of posting a lot of comments in rapid succession (that's flooding basically..) I think it's a better idea to edit your previous post and extend that.. With proper formatting that will make it a much nicer read, keeps the thread neat & tidy, and you will not come across as a 'spammer' as much.. Wink

When you need definition, it is usually good idea to start with Wikipedia. However keep in mind it is not 100% correct sometimes, and may be even biased.

Quote:

In computing, a hacker is any skilled computer expert that uses their technical knowledge to overcome a problem.

The person who does hacking pursuing destructive or illegal goals is called cracker.

hacker/cracker
The "bad hackers" are "dark hackers" or "black hat hackers", the "crackers" has the hackers subgroup that make the cracks and keygens for payment software.
Note: wikipedia is wroooong Eek!

@NapalMSX , the only hacker that can be associated with hats is Mark Ewing - he used a red hat, and created one of the first GNU/Linux distributions! Big smile

Ask anyone what they think hacking is,

they were manipulated from journalists (which were manipulated by lobbies that wanted to criminalize MIT and software-libre initiatives) since early 80’s - all those people really have no idea at all what hacking is all about, it’s a clear example of a "lie becoming a truth for how long it was repeated"
