MSX Pixel Art Preservation Collection Vol.1 released

MSX Pixel Art Preservation Collection Vol.1 released

Языки:

This collection of pixel art is intended to preserve the vast diversity of images that were published for the MSX system in all its generations.

It's composed of 3100 files with the best images from many sources, including games, demos, disk magazines, picture disks, BBSs, forgotten corners of the Internet, and so on. Many of the images were even hidden as Easter eggs.

sd_snatcher has been collecting these files since more than 30 years, and some months ago it occurred that everyone should be able to enjoy these.

But the collection is still far from complete. There were many more images that were published and are still not here. We are now counting with contributions from the community so the collection can grow even more.

With the only exception of animated GIFs, all files contained in this collection are stored in file formats that can be viewed in the MSX. Each file type was chosen to better preserve all the characteristics of the image, while still being easy to be viewed on the MSX.

We also invite you to list your personal top-10 images in the comments below.

Thank you! Smile

For anyone who googles about these topic someday, here's a small sample with some of my favorite images available in the collection, from many screen modes.

(note: the samples shown here were artificially resized to match the MSX Pixel Aspect Ratio. The images inside the collection have no such artifacts.)

That is fantastic, sd_snatcher. A feast for the eyes. Thank you for compiling these pieces of art. You are like the director of the best museum on a continent. Smile
Some of these I know (and, I guess are reasonably well known), some of them I had never seen before.
Even if I find a lot of pictures in 'higher' screen modes absolutely breathtaking, I could hardly take my eyes off the MSX1 rendition of "Metal Slug", which I think is really cool and well done (the only thing that's missing is a HW sprite version of, say, Eri Kasamoto Wink).

OMG, no. I really really really would like to emphasize that I'm not the author of the images contained in the collection. I just acted as a curator: I searched far and wide for these images, and when necessary converted them to normal MSX formats, assembled the ones that were broken in smaller images, and found ways to best restore any eventuality damaged parts.

My intention was to preserve them from bitrot or just being lost forever, as way of recognition to the great artists that expressed their impressive abilities in the MSX, in a form of art that much later would be known as Pixel Art.

I know the artists of some of them, maybe it would be nice to upload them in some wiki where we can crowd-annotate.

Please, Snatcher, excuse me for the misunderstanding.
However, you are a very, very great curator! Smile

Oh neat! I love the beautifully crafted pixel art. Smile

Hey, I have bunch of Peach Up and Pink Sox (read: NSFW) animations in GIF format, ripped by myself. Where can I send them? They were not featured in this vol.1 collection, at least.

I see Wapiko from Goldfish Warning! Wink She's the girl in that second screenshot (the animated one). Very underrated anime that I would highly recommend anyone watch if they're in the mood for cute and funny mid-'90s goodness!

...Also, these are awesome! Nice work collecting them all!

Nice! So many references are coming out. l_oliveira also reported via WhatsApp that the girl featured in GirlAni2.gif comes from the opening of the game Daskstalkers.

The idea of crowd-annotation is great. But a wiki might be too clumsy for that. A specific website like zxart.ee would be much better for this and for tagging, commenting etc. I'm baffled by the fact that there are websites like this for the ZX-Spectrum, C64 and Amiga, but not for the MSX.

Tip: there's an e-mail at the end of the main README.TXT file. ;)

I'm a bit curious about the animated gifs; I take it they were in some other format originally. Were any of those found?

There isn't a format. They were part of games/demos, so they were coded to animate like that. I dumped the frames and recreated them as animated GIFs so they could be easily watched without having to play the games.

I'm sorry, I didn't really mean a technical format; just where they originated.
I'd like to know where they come from, like the aleste animation and the racing themed ones Smile

@Samor

Some of the animations came from MSX-Fan disks, other from games and disk magazines. And some others I obtained so long ago (>=20 years) that I have no recollection of where they came from.

Good news! The MSX Pixel Art Vol.1 is now part of the Retro Gallery archives!

Be sure to log in there and click on "like" for your favourite images. And to complement any information you have about authors, dates etc.

The MSX Pixel Art Vol.2 should follow soon, alongside collections I sent for the PC-88, PC-98 and X68000.

The Retro Gallery allows crow-annotation. You can no log-in there and fill the Image Details like title, author, group, year etc.
