Cool! Thank you for that info!

I wonder if something like that would work for Crafton & Xunk -- the only disk-based game I've tried so far that's exclusively 50 Hz, so I haven't been able to play it on actual hardware just yet since my TV doesn't accept PAL signals. Might have to play around with my disk image at some point and see what I can come up with, as I'm a sucker for a good isometric game, and while I'm not sure whether or not Crafton & Xunk is GOOD, it certainly is isometric, so I've gotta try it!

If you have a 60Hz computer and the software starts in 50Hz, it's hardcoded. You've to change it somewhere in the software then...

Drat! It's a .com file run by autoexec.bat, too, so no modifying BASIC code for me. Oh well!

Made by a european company. It's supposed to run at 50Hz. If you'd play this on 60Hz the music would play faster than intended. If your monitor doesn't accept this frequency, you have a problem though.

Looking around I have seen people say that the fact that American TV's cannot display 50Hz is a firmware restriction that manufacturers place on TV's sold to the north american market. Supposedly to prevent gray market sales to other regions. So perhaps you can switch 50Hz back on in some hidden service menu.

One should not mix up 50 and 60 Hz with PAL and NTSC. On RGB level only the frequency is different. There is no special encoding. I understood that in the US there are hardly any TV's that take analogue RGB though.

For RGB in the US you essentially need some kind of EuroSCART to HDMI converter. There are cheap boxes on ebay that add some delay and can have image artefacts. Or you can get an expensive FrameMeister, which is no longer manufactured. Or the Open Source Scan Converter (OSSC).

Alternatively you can have a Japanese RGB21 setup and convert it in a similar fashion to HDMI.

My Life In Gaming over on youtube has an extensive RGB series in which they mention all the pros and cons.

I've never heard anyone talk about Crafton & Xunk before, and honestly, I don't even remember how I found out about it. But I looooooove isometric adventure games, so it's kind of inevitable that if one exists, I'll hear about its existence some way or another.

Too bad I'm not able to play this one all that easily, though. But at least I've still got Head Over Heels! That game is ridiculously good.

I think there is an MSX2 remake of head over heels. You probably want to check it out.
