MSXdev'18, the annual game development challenge which opened this edition on March the 12th of 2018, has resulted in 15 unique entries where Xracing by Brain Games is the overall winner of the contest. Runner up is Virus LPQ-79, both from the MSX Classic category. Third place on the grand score-board is Dreams Puzzle, winner of the MSX Freestyle category.

The MSXdev contest that has been around since 2003, gave us 15 brand new MSX games to enjoy on this year's edition. And the overall quality is just stunning. A tough challenge for the jury to decide a winner, for sure. Although there was a public-poll opened for every-one to vote his or her fave game, the poll system was not immune to abuse. Therefore the poll, and prices, were discarded. Hope next year will include a more secure poll.

Announced as grand-winner with 8.5 points is XRacing, a racing game by Brain Games. With just a fraction in difference of rewarded points -8.3-, Virus LQP-79, a horror-themed arcade game by Pentacour came in second. Dreams Puzzle ended third with 7.9 points total. All with a score of 9 points, best game-play came from Virus LPQ-79, Quartet, Bumper Ship Racing, PWND3, and Shoulder Blade Overdrive. Best gfx came from XRacing and Quartet, both 9 points. The best sounding game is Dreams Puzzle with 8 points.

More about the results can be read on MSXdev's web-site here. You can read the full jury-report on MSXdev web-site.

Congratulations Brain Games for taking the trophy and a big applause to the MSXdev Team for organizing the event and to all participants for creating unique MSX software!

Is the "msx.dev19" in the image a hint of things to come? Wink Anyway, the top three earned their spots.

Thank you at MRC for posting about this.
One remark: the result of the public poll wouldn't have influenced the final scores anyway. It's a completely separate prize from the main one (which results from the jury evaluations), and it will stay that way.

We were late to the party, but managed to get Quartet in on the last day before the competition closed. And I'm so glad we did! I'd like to thank the MSX community for their invaluable help, great feedback and new friendships. Cheers!

Getting ready for '19 here!

Timmy, you were the one who made Any Treasure Day? It made me want to try making a text adventure game as well... and I will say I was positively surprised when I couldn't drop the lamp on the other side of the cave.

Thanks for playing! Making adventure games on the MSX is a lot easier nowadays. You have many choices, like BASIC, but DAAD/PAW/Quill is now also available for MSX if I remember correctly, and for my game I used the GAC engine (which is the other popular text adventure 8-bit development engine back in the day).

So my adventure was written in that GAC specific language, and is a bit more readable, and therefore I can use it to do more specific tasks like prohibiting taking or dropping of items. It is however, another language to learn.

It might be a bit too technical to talk about the engine, the language or the game on this thread, but you're welcome to ask (perhaps in a new created thread) if you have more questions.
