Last week I was reading about the MSX paddle and i thought it was a real shame that there are so few games that supported it. one thing led to another and suddenly i started working on a game! you can check out and download the final result here. It's called Meteor Storm! It's a basic game both in that it was written in BASIC and it's very simple, but hopefully it can be a nice warm up or cool down before or after Breakout or Arkanoid. It uses DM System/2 but none of the VDP commands so I believe this will work on an MSX1. It also uses MSX-MUSIC but if you delete METEORS.MGS and rename PSG.MGS to METEORS.MGS you can hear the full music arranged for PSG, just no engine sounds! And if you don't have a paddle, load METEORKB.BAS instead of METEORS.BAS for keyboard support and METEORJP.BAS for joypad support. I do recommend using a paddle if possible though. I hope you enjoy it, let me know what you think or if you have any issues with it!
New BASIC Paddle Game
Nice!! Thanks for mention to DigiArka. Nice Ascii art title.
I will surely run it on a real machine as soon as I get back home.
Thank you! I actually cheated a bit and made the ASCII art in paint for the itch page, the game itself doesn't have a title screen. That'll be a goal for the next one for sure. And thank you for making the DigiAkra! I wasn't expecting much when I searched for a DIY paddle but it was super easy to build and works great.
Try to play it on an MSXturboR
Also, it crashed on my Boosted MSX2 openMSX configuration... but it works fine in for example a Panasonic FS-A1WSX.
Press STOP to enjoy the music!

Run this first and you should be fine:

Can you explain why that makes a difference?

It adds the missing paddle support back to BASIC.

Oh, was that the issue! I thought it was the R800 being speedy
Actually, still think it is, because I ran the keyboard version of the game.

Well... On tR you can always run the game on Z80 mode as well.
Sorry to hear about the boosted MSX2 crash. is that one of the degaults in openMSX? I'll take a look at it and see if I can fix the issue. Thank you for playing!
Also, I added METEORMS.BAS which allows you to play on MSX2 and above with a mouse, so if you're in an emulator or have a compatible device you can now have a closer experience to playing with a paddle than when using the keyboard or joypad. Suprisingly the mouse version runs better than the keyboard version does in webMSX which chugs a bit at least on my computer.
That's one of the default machines indeed, but it's not a realistic one. It's very beefy
