This is a screenshot from a fan-made MSX version of Jail Break, unfinished unfortunately. Jon Cortázar has been working on this for a while.
On msx 1 it does cause seizure people with epilepsy due to high flickering.
It will flicker like a hell with all those sprites on screen.
Probably some of the sprites can be transformed to tiles.
Not real, but still nice to see!
Given the moving characters size I would go to full color tile based sprites with 4px movements, leaving sprites for bullets and such . Of course the scroll would be 8px, like the Spectrum version.
Anyway, not a great Konami game...
the problem is that sprites overlap with background that is not a solid color. So because of the color clash problem, well , we have horrible block sw sprites here, may be worse than flickering sprites.
To summarize, another almost impossible game to achieve on msx1 at a decent level due to TMS VDP limits .
Maybe something like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q547Xo5tLnY
accepting flicker and two sprites for each enemy and main charater and using tiles for bullets.
Flickering could prioritise the pants, arms and bullets, then I think it would not be too prominent.
But is it a good game? Judging by the general opinion on Green Beret, my hopes are not high…
Green Beret’s arcade original is not half bad, it’s just the conversion which was not a good MSX conversion. MIA is very similar to Green Beret but has some FM soundtrack and the player can go underground. Jail Break seems nice (the arcade version) but probably the conversion was not.
I think that Green Beret has reached such a status that even if it's a bad game, it's still wanted by half of the community ;-)
Found this game:
jail-break from MSX Generator
But .... what if it converts everything to V9990?
A greeting. :D
