Well I have the UT-130E as well (it is a bit more expensive but that does not necessarily mean it will perform better). It has a smaller case so also a smaller coil, will that translate it into heating up earlier.

Anyway I think for the purposes here measuring MSX under use (say with a multi purpose cartridge inserted) is a real world test and the way we will use these. Charging a laptop can be done easily (there are simple travel plug converters that just change the connector, some chargers come with interchangeable plugs).

You're on right track there. With this kind of simple converters the size of an equipment and how heavy it is tells already a lot. Very small and light... No, it's better to leave in shop, you don't want to risk burning 500-1000e MSX stuff with it.

I believe your suggestion is a good test in this case. Wont tell total truth, but is far better than nothing. If you have time to do that laptop charging test, that would be really nice. Would tell lot more how the converter copes with a higher load...

Without an connected MSX the Nissyo DN-203 outputs 102 +/- 1 V.
Edit:
Source is 234 +/-1 V.

Pretty impressive, clearly better than UT. I hope that the output keeps on good level when more load applies.

Did you measure the voltage coming from wall socket? That's quite important to check too.

Before the UT-130E I had a chunky and heavy (Chinese) converter which got hot and made an audible humming sound which stopped temporarily if I gave it a knock. The UT-130E has always stayed cool and did not have any such problems and works very reliable, I’ve never read any complaints either and by now there’s quite a few people who own one. So I think that is not a fair reasoning you have above, and I think talk about risk of burning is just casting doubt entirely unwarrantedly.

You can’t say that based on this information alone. In your measurement the input voltage was very close to 240V so obviously the output voltage is going to be higher as well. But still within 10% parameters so it’s perfectly fine. Additionally, I would measure at least with an MSX connected.

I tried to measure voltage but accidentally had my multimeter set in the opposite direction (2kΩ instead of 500V) and now I killed the multimeter Crying. Oops!

I have couple of heavier converters in active use. None of those issues which you mention. But they were not made in China either. The heavier converter (rated up to 500W) at hand last night which I measured just as an example is used with US 110V stuff, btw. And the coil in it is specified originally for 220V input.

I had one chunky Chinese converter, it had actually no humming or heating and voltage level was quite ok. Electric safety-wise it was rather questionable. Didn't look so totally bad externally (except you could tell right away that it must be something Chinese or so), but internally it had rather bad wiring and bad soldering. Traded it to a friend of mine who I was sure that he knows what is he toying with (and have capabilities modifying it, if he wants). Seemed to be rigged for active use when I last time visited there.

I'm not actually pointing to UT with the comment of melting and so, it was meant to be generally about lightweight things which I have seen some people using... Even while their packaging mentions that they are not to be used for more than electric shaver or so.

True, my mistake there, I made an assumption that there would not have been anymore for example 220V grid and the voltage should have been around 230V. Anyway, even if the input voltage has 10V difference, then the converter output difference is less than 5V...

Yes, agree there that it would be better to have at least small load.

Well I trust both these Japanese transformers to be built correctly (you know what I mean). The UT is smaller but has indeed never gotten hot, but also I’ve never loaded it to the rated 130W level. I have ordered a multimeter and will also test both transformers here on the Dutch grid.

On the multimeter’s I looked at (online) most appear to have fuses, so possibly it’s just a matter of replacing a fuse?
